I have been getting an odd engine noise on startup. It occurs when I depress the accelerator when I start up my engine. If I don't depress the accelerator on startup the noise does not occur. It sounds like a whirling metallic sound (hard to describe) and lasts for up to 15 seconds. I am only depressing the accelerator a tiny bit on startup. I wonder if this is not a turbo noise. Any help on this problem would be great.

Thanks

I too had a strange noise once. I don't press the pedal during startup, but this noise sounded like a bolt went flying into the engine. That was it. It only happened once after the truck sat for a couple of days. Nothing could be found and it seems to be fine.

I wouldnt doubt its a noise due to low oil pressure. Possible your turbo has some wear and with the low oil pressure on initial startup, the high rpm is doing bad things to the turbo. Have you checked for any end play?

Probably better to lay off the throttle until the engine gets a little warmth into it, and oil pressure.

Could also be the fan, when the weather cools off, the viscous fluid in the fan takes longer to heat up on startup, and the fan stays locked in for longer.
