Driveline vibration and engine miss

Daimler vs Chrysler IS THIS THE SCOOP?

Earlier today when I fired up the cummins, I caught an odd transmission noise that sounded like metal vibrating. ( Kinda like if you put a nut on a metal vibrating surface. ) It now happens sometimes at low RPMS, sometimes at high ones and in all gears. Hills don't matter and sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

I just hauled the first time with the truck this weekend, (Phoenix to Denver with a 6x12 Uhaul). The truck has 50k miles on it. Could it be the infamous 5th gear nut problem or something else?

UPDATE:
Tonight when running the truck to/fro Denver on I-25, I discovered that the transmission noise can be stopped by pushing the shifter knob more into the gear it is in. I could push the knob about 1/2 in more into each gear. When I did this and held it, the noise stopped.

Seems like something might be loose with the shifter.

Mark, can you tell if the noise is coming from under the truck or are you just hearing it through the shifter??

I heard a similar noise from mine and it turned out to be the nut holding the gear shift knob head on. The nut was vibrating on the washer and the sound was transmitting through the stick making it sound like it came from the transmission. Just pop the gear pattern plug off the top and tighten the nut underneath.

This is my first posting in the TDR, hope it helps out...

Or is that BAGGING sand???

Either way - BOUT TIME you quit the sanding of the bagging and started the "brag-in".

OR did it take you that long to read ALL the posts?

(JNutter - I didnt think your truck WAS that QUIET that you needed the "chirp")

azcummins, had the same problem on my 2000 3/4 ton. it did it all winter and then just went away. i have no idea what it was, and either does the dealer, theay did not have a clue. But i figured the same things as you, that when you put pressure on the stick it goes away. Mine did it when above 65mph, let me know what happens.

thanks for the thoughts guys.

I just put on a new knob when the noise started so I'm going to put on my old knob and see what happens on my trip tomorrow from Denver to Columbia, Missouri.
