Winter has settled in here & I'm having trouble w/ the motor warm up time w/o a load on it. Today the temp was 8* #ad
& after popping the hood I noticed that the fan spins freely before I started it but after starting this cold motor the fan immediately spins. #ad
Is this a viscous fan type clutch? Will it always spin, therefore spin at different speeds dependant upon operating temps? Or should this fan NOT spin until it reaches a warm operational temp? Could not find anything in archives on fan operation. Did find info on Cold Weather Covers available & the cardboard trick between the radiator & intercooler. Help! Need heat out of this mighty powerplant.

The fan does spin all the time it's just not locked up as it will be when it's hot. When it does lock up you'll know it,it's very loud. Odds are your fan has never locked up unless you've towed in high temps. The fan spinning shouldn't increase the warm up time because the thermostat is closed. I know what you mean about a long time to warm up when it's cold, plug your rig in overnight and use your heater on recirc. I've found that very cold air from the outside flowing through the heater coils is more than enough to cool the engine, the t-stat won't open. On recirc it will warm much faster due to warm air flowing over the heater coils. I've even had my temp up to 180 and switched the heater to draw outside below 0 air,the temp dived down to the barely warmed up line almost instantly. A winter cover is what I use, cardboard will work just as well, remember to leave 10% open for the intercooler.
