any ideas appreciated.

A properly sized strap wrench from HD or Lowes will take 'er off. . Probably lookin at less than 10$. You`ll have to take the intake air hose off to get that close tho. .

Or just goto the dealer you bought it from and give em a piece of your mind. Might get a free oil change out of it. . or at least a discount. . heh

good luck

edit--- heres one for 10bux. . made for removing water filter canister housings...

Sounds like we're still waiting for Lothar, the Bulgarian weight lifter to retire from the Cummins plant. Those first filter changes have been an issue forever! How long do Bulgarians live, anyway??? :)

OE first oil filter change

Yes I have an appt with local dealer to do the change and I have read here about this problem but man there is no room to maneuver in and around that filter on the new rigs. I crushed the filter a little and quit before I made it undrivable. The rubber strap wrench always worked on the old 02 but could not get my hands and tool into that tight of space.

Thanks for all the responses and bulgarion remarks.

Don't know about the newest trucks, but we HAD a tool that fit over the flutes on the bottom of the filter... and with a 12" extension and 1/2" ratchet, popped the filter off painlessly. Then changed the flute pattern. Has there been a revised wrench update?

I've found it much less aggravating to just go ahead and remove the airbox and intake tube. It takes a bit longer, but gives much easier access to the filter. I think it actually saves time when you take into account the issues you are having.

Go to Sears & get a 3 prong metal filter wrench - little over $10, use a 3/8" wratchet & 21" extension - get it from the bottom. Removing the airbox??? - way too much work IMO. Make sure you let the oil drain ~ 30 min. Doing yourself is cheaper & faster than going to dealer + you make sure it all gets drained and your filter & oil of choice are used "+" the dealers car wash hop not drivin your truck

I agree do it from the bottom. take a filter to napa or where ever and get a wrench that fits, then a long ext. and its a piece of cake

wrong wrong I tried the 93mm 15 lug over the bottom of filter and it wouldnt touch it. tried the strap with 1/2 drive over the filter and it was just crushing it so I quit. took off air filter and intake tube but no room for tool and my hands to operate. going to let dealer deal with it first time only .

thanks Dave

My '10 had the same hard to remove oil filter.
I used one of these for my 1st oil change. I did it from under the truck with a breaker bar, extension, and one of these,
LISLE - END CAP FILTER WRENCH-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage
and one of these,
FILTERGLOVE-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage
and didn't spill a drop! Changing the filter that is.

Remember to tap that filter wrench on the end of the filter with force! It has got to be seated hard or it will just slip. Future oil changes will not require the forceful seating.

I probably do not have to remind you that there is a lot of oil in this engine.
I used an 8 quart oil pan. Didn't take me long to realize I had made a terrible mistake!!! I still can believe I did that.
