Anybody have their OEM muffler rot out from the outside in? I only have 45k on the truck and it's shot and leaking. The bottom seam rotted out but didn't leak and now it's leaking. The rest of the muffler is in great shape. I'm thinking it was bad metal in the bottom. Anyways, would another OEM muffler do the same? I don't want any loud mufflers or one that causes exhaust drone. Any ideas?

Note, my 93 with 340K on it has the OEM exhaust system still in use. The muffler is just now starting to rot through but no leaks yet. Another reason why my 07 muffler has me shocked.

Thanks,

Earl

try a bank's moster exhaust system from Gale bank's

Thanks but too expensive and loud for me. Also probably wouldn't work with my pac brake. Also only my muffler needs replaced, rest of the system is good to go.

I was just told yesterday by the owner of an excellent, reputable AND knowledgeable muffler shop, that the oem muffler, at least on my 2005 that he was working on, was made from quality 409 Stainlees steel with an aluminized coating on the outside. He was installing a 5" chrome exhaust tip that a TDR member had given to me some monthgs ago. Judging by my own experinces trying to cut stainless steel, versus regular steel tubing ,with a hacksaw, and by how long and hard it took him to cut through the oem tailpipe with a sawzall and a fresh metal blade, I would have to agree!! If that is the case, I would think that your muffler rotting from the outside in was either due to "bad" metal like you suggest, or maybe more likely salts and/or chemicals being used to melt snow on the roads that you drive.

Does anyone know for sure what the oem mufflers are made from??

Try to get warranty coverage through the "emissions" section, I think that is an 80,000 mile coverage.

Go dig out your warranty booklet in the glovebox and check it out.

Worth a look... ...

There would be no point in aluminizing stainless steel. Production SS systems will turn a dark brown, but not actually rust. When I installed the Super B on my signature truck, I had to shorten the engine pipe 2", and cut it with no problem. It appears to be some grade of stainless, as it is not aluminized and is a different color than the rest of the system. I regularly touch up the welded seams on the muffler, and it is still in good shape. Of course, the truck is always garaged and has been since new.

409 stainless will rust... and rust through. Its not much more durable than aluminized steel in my experience.

Doesn't the OE muffler have a drain hole drilling in the bottom to drain condensation?

It will not be covered under warrenty. The muffler is not considered emmissions equipment. The cat is what is covered for the 5. 9. I just went through the same problem a year ago and tried to go the warrenty route. Denied. Do a search and you will find that many here like Donaldson mufflers. Free flowing and not much louder than stock.

For what it's worth, I was told that the stock "stainless" isn't anything more than aluminized steel and the scrap yard wouldn't give anything more for it.

Thats too bad, I have seen people get away with exhaust coverage on cars that way, maybe some dealers will present it for warranty as such and some wont.

I replaced my factory muffler with a MBRP straight thru muffler and left the rest of the exhaust system stock. Not much noise gain. Might be an option for you. If I still had my stock muffler, I would let you have it for shipping, but I don't have it any more.
