Hey fellas, am I correct in assuming that the 47re has four forward gears?

Yes you are correct, the fourth is overdrive.

Transmission numbering convention on these is that the first digit is the number of forward gears, and the second number is the capacity of the transmission, how much torque it can handle. The 45RFE became the 545RFE when they activated the 5th gear.

It stands for "not enough torque capacity for a Cummins. " :-laf
