I found a 5w-40 synthetic oil Farm and Fleet brand and it is ci-4 rated not the new cj-4. Now should I be worried about it being store brand and buy it or just suck it up and buy the Rotella t-6 like I always do. The price is 25 bucks for 2 gallons which is really cheap and figure my truck and excursion I could save a few bucks.

See if it meets the CUMMINS CES 20076/20077/20078 SPECS.

Why is it People will go out and spend $35,000 to $60,000 for a vehicle and then try to save a buck on oil and filters? This I will never understand.

I believe you pay for what you get, buy cheap and have issues with the product or pay for a good product with no issues.

If you read the "TDR" magazines that are sent to us each quarter. You should remember the issue on oil quality and what are good brands for our trucks and what is not. That is my bible and I follow what TDR has suggested. I see no reason to change.

I would do some research as to who makes the oil, like Valvoline makes Napa oils. If the oil is made from a reputible company, run it. If there are any questions, don't. It's that simple.

Costco sells 3 gallons of Delo every day for about $33. A much better buy. I was there a couple days ago and they had $5 off.

Haven't decided on it yet ,I'll have to find out who makes it for Farm and Fleet. It just seems like a good price and for it to be the ci-4 kinda makes it more tempting and for 25 for 2 gallons.

Sounds like a good price, Keep in mind a Cummins long block reman. is only around $13,000. Look at my specs. in my signature. There is an old English saying, Penny Wise and Pound Foolish
Good Luck Capt Phil

Got to ask, but why two gallons?

I want to say most of the Traveler brand is made by Warren Oil in this area... sort of like Walmart's Supertech line, made to a prescribed specification by a local oil supplier.

That's just the container size the are selling it in ,I know kinda odd . I'll look at the mfg next time I'm there if it's one of the big names I will probably try a oil change in my wifes excursion see how it goes, and maybe get a UOA done and see how it is holding up.

Real question is... are you going to be able to buy it over, over and over from the same place when you need it, for the life of your truck? There is no doubt that Rotella will still be available even after End Times.

I don't know how long they will have that oil but I would figure they would keep it around . It is a national chain store so maybe they are trying it out . I figure try one oil change and like I said I will get a UOA done and go from there also gonna check who the mfg is before I buy.

I was reading an article the other week, wish I could remember where... Anyway, it said that unlike many years ago, the quality difference between a store-brand oil and a top brand is negligible.

That said, in my family gassers and my lawnmowers I'll use store brands, but in my CTD, my high-performance car and my motorcycles, I use a top brand.

If the oil is API certified, then it must meet a minimum requirement... if it meets the Cummins approval number, even better.

That said... while I would run a store-brand in an older Cummins (low RPM), these newer CRDs tend to run hotter and at higher RPM, not to mention the "EGR" done in the head of the 04. 5+ engines (the oil takes some abuse).

And further, I have literally watched Rotella "shrink" by 2 quarts in one extended high RPM run in my own truck on a single trip down I35... attributed to boil off from high temps. I run synthetics to 20k+ without a change in level on the dipstick (through similar conditions). My truck typically uses no oil between changes (234k on the clock).

It really depends on your use (or abuse)... while some of us may never stress a generic store-brand, others of us stress high quality synthetics. And that's only something the OP can decide/determine.

For right now it's daily driver grocery getter status, summer time we tow the TT with the excursion . I'm gonna try it and see how the numbers come back from blackstone,if they are bad then never again so we'll see.
