Ive posted on a couple of threads and no one seems to have any idea what would cause this. I just got home today after a second trip to the dealer and no problems were detected. My symptoms are light smoke on takeoff- extremely light throttle application, even through the neighborhood at 15-20 mph. Also more than normal smoke on acceleration around town and on the highway-even at cruise. And if I lay into her and come to a stop I can hear an injector like knock when she idles down followed by a clacking sound for a second or two. I've driven the truck 15k miles without these symptoms and I'm wondering if I've got some carboned injectors retarding the timing some or what? I've changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, changed the oil and had it in the dealer twice(different ones) to no avail, any ideas the dealer didn't catch, bad MAP or otherwise?

Also - what color is the smoke? I've rode in 3 different '05 and they do put out some black smoke that quickly cleared to a haze even on moderate acceleration.

I only got the clacking sound at a certain rpm on slow accelleration due to the rail pressure slowly overcoming the nozzle blockage at that point to produce a good spray pattern (rather than the dribbling fuel). So when the fuel finally ignited it was late and produced the white smoke as well as the knock from lack of pilot injection (used to quiet our HPCR's down). So it is conceivable that the truck could do this too on decelleration as the rail pressure drops.

In my experience the dealer service people I've dealt with suck at working on these problems. They are too much "by the book" unless you luck out on finding a tech that has been around for a while working on different types of diesels. I personally would try to find an authorized Bosch diesel service center in your area (ask on this site too for references) that works on this stuff, day-in and day-out for a living. I know this is easy for me to say as I don't have the warranty anymore because of my mods.

Maybe if you run the truck real hard to get it hot and rail pressures up to blow out the crap then that might help along with using some fuel additive?

Please keep us updated!

Thanks JSteiger for your reply! I just put a bottle of Power Service Kleen to about 15 GAL diesel through it and it seems a little better. The clacking sound comes on when I rev up to about 2K and let it settle down, then I get a sound of no pilot injection and a clack for about 2 seconds or so and clears up. The haze/smoke is right off idle and clears up when boost comes on, but just in the neighbohood it smokes and I'm not even close to boost. If I jump in it it smokes alot more than it used to(heavy at first then a haze with boost). I had a Quad box on it and it used to put out some smoke and totally clear up with boost. I took off the box after I let the truck sit on a 2 week vacation, the symptoms started on the way home (lack of power and smoke). I'm sending the box back tomorrow to get checked out, it doesn't matter what setting it doesn't make any more power. By the way I took the truck in for the clack prior to the chip and they stated it was "normal" the chip was in for about 2K of trouble free miles until my vacation. Thanks for the reply and I did keep track of your thread as well as another pertaining to my symptoms, glad you got yours figured out.
