Well I broke something. I was getting on the freeway and eased into full throttle and when it was shifting from 3rd-4th (75mph) I hear this huge CLUNK and the rpms went up. I coasted to the side of the road and put it into park, popped the hood and looked under the truck. I couldn't see anything leaking. No oil coming from the exhaust. Nothing from the head gasket. All hoses seem to be hooked up and everything seems to look in order. I get back in the truck and turn it off and check for codes. There were no codes. When I put it in 1 gear nothing, 2nd gear nothing and drive nothing. When it's in any one of those gears if I step on it the engine will only rev to 2100 rpms and not go any higher. In neutral it will rev like normal. Won't move in 4hi or 4lo or go in reverse. Did I break an input shaft/output shaft or flex plate? Does that happen by getting on it with out doing a launch? There wasn't any noise or clanking with it in gear that I could hear. What's wrong with my truck??? :{ :{

if you broke the in-put shaft i would not run the truck

the converter and the trans has metal pieces in it and it will go through the trans causing more damage

if the truck runs fine and will not go any where in gear and the drive shaft is in tacked then it must be the trans

it is common to break the shaft going into loc-up or 4'th gear you will have the most tq going through the trans at this time, no slippage

Try this, if the park position holds it, then the output shaft is good. If it doesn't, then the output may be broken.

If after the truck cools down and it tries to move under power, it's probably the Overdrive unit. Bolt on item.

Here's a picture that I don't like to see.

Finally got it on a trailer and had to take it off a mile or so down the road because the truck is too heavy and was causing the tires on the trailer to rub up against the fender. Here are a couple of crappy pics taken with my phone. It's going to the shop today to start pulling the transmission apart. You play you gotta pay :(

Should I just sack up and do all three or just a better input shaft and output shaft so this doesn't happen again. Has anyone ever heard of anyone breaking an intermediate shaft? Would I really need to do an intermediate? What kinds of things break the output shaft.

Why not do all 3? At least those wouldn't be a worry anymore. I know for me money is an issue so I'm just asking a question, not being critical.

I believe the 2100rpm limit is the torque management system in the ECU. It protects the transmission and torque converter from frying itself in a high-load situation. If you mash the throttle pulling a big boat out of the water, or a big 5th wheel on a steep hill, you will see the rpm stop at 2100 until you get rolling.

There was a thread about it somewhere...

Ahh Man!!!

The verdict is out... it was the input shaft. Problem is it wasn't clean. It kind of spiraled when it snapped. They got half of it out and the other half is stuck in the TC some how. The part that came out you can see where it scared the splines. So I have to send it back to Suncoast and have them do what's called a refresh. They'll go through the TC make sure that everything is fine and replace the spline portion. The clutches and bands are good and there aren't any other problems with it. I'll also need to get a new pump. Man I wish that I would of had the money to do the input shaft at first. I would have saved a lot of money. I am going to do all three shafts this time so this doesn't happen again.
