Went out to go to work this morning, and see a puddle of oil under my engine. Son of a ... I didn't have time too really look to see where it came from. It is from the front of the engine for sure, and no I haven't done the KDP fix :( . My front main was leaking a little, and had been for some time. Could it have totally failed? Oil is everywhwere, because it seems that the oil is leaking onto the pulleys.

Any ideas as to what might have possibly self destructed would be greatly appreciated.

Oh ya, last night, I heard a strange rattle sound (intermittent, not loud) coming from the engine compartment. I thought to myself "I'll check that out tomorrow". I guess I was right  .

Truck is a 98 12v

Thanks a lot,

Matt

Large oil puddle combined with a rattling/grinding noise = KDP failure IMO. I hope that it is not because the work involved to change the gear housing is not fun.

Dan

Some of the 98 12 valves are about the worst when it comes to the KDP. Hopefully something else. Make sure you check the time gear case all around really when. Maybe try and degrease it.

Sounds like your procrastination and reluctance to take a more offensive stance has cost you. It is too late for you, but maybe others will learn by this and adapt their thinking enough to allow the "fix it before it breaks" mentality to override their "If it isn't broke don't fix it " rules?

Man cut the guy some slack Y-not. mdivincentis sorry about your luck brother. I for one hope that maybe it is a leaky seal and you get her fixed, and while you are at it give the KDP a plugging and forget about it.

I was under my truck today working on a Kodiak step and noticed quite a bit of oil underneath on the passenger side. It was enough to pretty well coat everything and appeared to be coming from the front of the motor. Turned out to be my oil filter was leaking around the seal. First time that has happened with a Fleetguard. I always prefill the filter when changing it and also put a thin film of new oil on the seal. I've always put them on only as tight as I can get it by hand, no wrenches. Anyway, put on a new filter and no more leaks. Hope you can be that fortunate.

Thank you for the lecture, y-knot

Got 'er to my shop last night. Sure enough, the KDP got me. There's about a 1" x 1 1/2" hole in the case. :--) Oh well, I guess it's cam time :D (hey Piers!). Thanks to those that answered my questions/concerns!!

Matt

Piers's camkshaft rocks. I put one in my 1995 when the KDP bit. There is a lot of good advise here on camshaft changes. Piers has a good tool for removing and installing the lifters.

Dan

mdivincentis, my seal leaked behind the gear case, I had the dealer do it with my extended warranty. Warranty co. took a dump right after I made the claim and got stuck with the bill.

All I can say, is get it done before the upcoming dyno day in Fort Collins.

BTW, is your's the truck that's 100% Rhino lined?

R. ebel put in the Piers Cam about a year ago and he really liked the difference. Richard helped me tab mine about 40k miles ago and it was only out about a 1/16", guess I got lucky.

TCP-

Ya, thats my truck. Line-X, actually :D.

Don't worry, I'll be ready for that dyno. I hear there is some kinda team deal with prizes available for the highest team HP? Oughta be fun!!

SBrandon-

Looks about like that :( . Gave me a good excuse to do some mods though .
