We'll tonite when I got home I noticed oil leaking in the front of the truck. popped the hood and the leaking is starting right under the fan idler housing. :(

Looks like another KDP attack:mad:   :(

Man this sucks, you can guess what I'm doing in the AM.

Dee,

Ahhww Man, that bites. Im surprised you did not Kill that pin already. Your gonna have to pull the cam dude. What a drag.

It really seems the big HP trucks are getting the dowel pin problems more than others.

Sorry to hear it Dee. Maybe that super slick amsoil let it slide out too easy:D . Just kidding!

Don~

Don some how I knew the AmsOil was going to come up. Here is my plan for now...

I like you have probibly been budgetting that new Cam from Dd in the bombing budget down the road here (???) So in the Am I'm going to pull the outer cover and try and seal the crack up to get me by a year or so.

Tell me about installing the new front seal.

Get the front cover seal from Cummins with the seal driver. The driver is stamped steel thingee. Its a piece of cake to install. The old seal is kinda tight in the cover. You have to apply firm strikes to get it out.

Gaskets and seal are about 65 bucks. I hope it did not take any bad stuff out like the injection pump gear.

Just joking on the Amsoil

Don~

Dee,

I went and found my receipts for the gaskets.

oil seal with driver is Part# 3804899 (it also has a dust seal to cover the oil seal with it)

gear cover gasket is : 3918673

Hey Dee

Sorry to hear about that dang pin. Don is right get the gaskets from Cummins, $20. 00 cheaper than Dodge. Just got mine last week and going to do my pin in the morning. Good luck with stopping the leak.

Here is what really sucks guys... I got one of th first KDP kits back right before the USPSA Nationals, being as all my time was being used to practice I gave it to another local TDR member and planned on getting it back, it ended up going out of state and I didn't get it done. It kind of goes with the addiage pay me now of pay me alot more later. It's later:mad:

Bummer

Dee,

Sorry to here of your missfortune! It would sure be nice if Cummins would admit that this is a real problem and take responsibility for it. There opinion is that it's VERY rare.

John

Post on this thread if you run into problems or have questions doing the KDP this AM and I'll call you. It was posted to check all the bolts in the Assy. case for looseness, The bolt on mine used for the tab wasn't tight.

!@#$%^ dowel pin

Oh man!!:( :(... That bites the big one! I killed my dowel pin this weekend and sent the jig back to Brandon. I knew if I had the time, I too, would put it off until it was convenient. So, when I got the jig Saturday AM, It was finished Saturday PM.

I sure hope you really want a new camshaft. It's the only reason I can think of for putting off the fix.

Sorry,

-Paul R. Haller-

R. ebel,

Cummins is well aware of the situation. Do I think they will step forward on their own and take responsibility for the KDP? Yes, and it will happen right after Hell freezes over. For me, the KDP issue speaks for the character and greed of Cummins. I just hope no one is killed or maimed due to a KDP breaking a cam shaft at the wrong time.

OUCH!!!

DEE

Sure is a bummer - - Seeing you were the first one to have jig #6 in your hands.

I've "temporarily fixed" several housings with good success. The tough part is getting it clean. I rough it out with Brakleen and compressed air several times, then I use a electronics contact cleaner (leaves no residue) to finish cleaning. I use a industrial alum. filled epoxy putty - Devcon - to fill the crack as best I can.

I let it set-up overnight, then put the front cover back on.

I then plug the vent tube, hook up a hose to the dipstick tube, the other end to a vacuum pump and draw about 5"hg. in the motor. Then I cover the whole area with a thin epoxy (JB Weld) especially the area where the housing meets the block.

If there are any torn gasket or pin holes, the vacuum will draw in the epoxy to seal them.

You can get the Devcon Putty (ord. #00260356) and LPS Contact Cleaner (ord. # 00252916) From MSC 800-645-7270. They have a warehouse in Reno - you should get it in one day.

Hope this info. will be of help - - CPFF

Well It's back together. All the gears looked great:eek: . I pressed the crack back together and used some special permatex epoxy and filled the crack. I got it all back together and won't start it until 9:30 tonite. The epoxy was hard before I reassembled it, so hopefully it will be set bu then. The pin fell out as soon as the cover was loose and could have been used again(NOT).

Thansk for all your help and replies. And one last word don't wait until this happens to you!!!!!!!

drawson,

Hopefully you have a heat lamp or something on the epoxy as it cures. You efforts will be wasted if you don't cure it at 60 deg. F or higher. Best of luck with it.

I could not stand waiting for jig once I found out about the dowel pin trouble. Got the stuff from Cummins went home, 2 or so hours later the pin was tabbed, new front seal installed, no more little seep out of the seal... two birds, no waiting! Drove to work the next day relaxed!

Mike

drawson,

Did you leave the pin out? If so, be careful. When mine fell out, I was going to leave the pin out until a Dodge mechanic (who also builds pull trucks for his buddies) told me that you run a high risk of more damage if you leave the pin out in a high horsepower truck. Once you take out the pin, all that is left to hold the housing in place is the bolts. When ever you take off the cover next time, check the bolts. Chances are that most of the bolts are only a little more than hand tight. This could ruin anything from a crank seal to a fuel pump bearing (or something of the sort).

Dee:

Sorry about the KDP on your truck but it sounds like

you have already solved the problem!

Wanted to let you know that Piers did all of his mods

to my HX-40 and it is on its way back to me now. I

will let you know how I like it! Is yours still doing

good?

Take care!

drawson, good luck with the fix,if you need to heat the area to cure it,plug the truck in,the block heater should give you the temps you need to cure the epoxy.

Thanks all again. I am spoiled I have a nice 75 Deg heater shop to do all my work in so setting the epoxy up isn't a problem. I now have 45 miles on the fix and it is dry as a bone.

As far as the inside bolts go I pulled everyone I could get too, cleaned them and lock tight (blue) them. The bolt right below the pin hole would have been out in a couple of weeks. Which leads me to question sdid the bolt coming loose help the pin in falling out of did the pin falling out cause the bolt to loosen??

One problem I have had is that I didn't get the mag pick-up for the tach close enough. Anyone have a spec on this???
