Was back in Iowa last week, and visited with a buddy of mine who is the proud new owner of a 2001 F-350 PSD... . Anyway, it isn't stock appearance wise (4" lift, wheels, and 315 BFG AT's) VERY nice lookin rig, and it has some sort of aftermarket exhaust and an AFE filter. He just got it week before last and he CLAIMS as far as he knows under the hood is stock. I have no idea what to look for, so I had to take his word for it (my first mistake).

Here's the oh no part. My truck just has the minor mods on it in my sig, basically just the EZ. BUT around town, kind of stop light racin, and playin around, I've never had a problem with a stock 6. 0 PSD, and a mildly chipped 7. 3 PSD. I went to get on it to pass my buddy with the 2001 last week, he got on it at the same time I did, and then I seen the smoke, then his tail lights..... LOL The truck has NO gauges, so I recomended that to be his next purchase...

But my question is this. How do you tell (if anyone on here knows) if a PSD has a "chip" or if it has been programmed? Next question is, what can I do to my truck, with the stock transmission (can't afford full DTT right now), to avoid this embarrasing situation???..... :{ Oh yeah, he said that if it WAS programmed, they didn't compensate for tire size since his speedo was still about 5mph off... . Anyone know how much the stock Ford transmission will hold for HP?

I almost forgot, I think my LP is givin up the ghost, after one truck stop fuel up, I couldn't pull more than 3 psi FP on the way to IA. After a while it came back up. I also wasn't getting very good mileage, even according to the computer. 15-16 where as it usually shows around 17-18 avg. Truck also seems to be STRONGER now that I am back up in altitude here in CO... . seems odd... . Or could just be my imagination too... Could this be part of the problem? I haven't checked codes yet.

If you seen smoke from a 01 PSD then you know it has some kind of position chip installed. The 7. 3's did not smoke hardly any at all and shouldn't have cleaned your clocked like that. When a 7. 3 has been chipped or equipped with a flip chip you will here a strange sound from the exhaust. They kind of sound like they are mixing up the cylinders and its very easy to detect. Most Ford owners know if they can not make them run the lift them, install an exhaust & air intake and then add some big dubs to finish the look. Hence the Ford battle cry. . My truck won't make power,so I'll lift it and make it look cool. Beware there are those 7. 3 owners who will make some power, look stock except for their stacks, carry enough weight around to seem heavier than a elephant and when your least expecting it,slap one on you like a redheaded step child. Opppsss,I think I just described Dockboy and gave away his secrets :-laf :-laf ... ... Andy

Looks like your only option is to not pick fights with people you're not willing to lose to or aren't sure what they're running. Also, you might consider something a little bigger than 275's for injectors, if/when it's time for that mod.

I got no problem losing... . LOL I lose to boondocks '98 12v all the time... Was just a lil shocked when he "thought" it was stock, and he beat me... And the rv275's I prolly won't go with. Was just thinkin about it a while back to hopefully baby my stock transmission for a while. But now I'm thinkin otherwise... Just need to find that money tree I planted a few years back... .

I did a lil research on thedieselstop.com, and it appears there isn't any way to see if it's been programmed. You can check for a chip, but without an OBDII scanner we can't check to see if it's been programmed. I told him he might wanna check into that before he decides to add a chip or something too it, as some of them don't seem to stack well.

Also the Edge Evolution for example adds 60-100hp, depending on setting programmed in, and doesn't adjust for tire/gear changes. So I'm guessing it's been programmed. There wheren't massive amounts of smoke, but I've never seen a stock 7. 3l PSD smoke hardly at all even up here at 6500'. So when I saw the puff come outta his at 1500' I had a feelin it wasn't stock.....

Wonder if I could talk the wife into a REAL transmission... . :-laf :-laf

Also since I've put off fixin my LP for too long I need to get that taken care of ASAP as well... .

how about you guys put 10,000 pounds on the rear and then race. the stock 6. 0's are fast, heck my slightly modified 99 7. 3 was fast. just see where his truck is 3 years from now and where yours is.
