I couldn't think of a better place to put this, so I turned to my trusty old 12 valve forum.

Does anyone know what all needs to be done to a salvage title vehicle to make it drivable legally? I assume that you have to have it inspected, but what all does that involve? Is there an emissions check? Where I live, there are no emission checks, but I assume that it is a state thing and they might be picky about stuff like that. I hope that there is no smog test because this truck is "healthy" and tends to puke a little black smoke.

My truck has a salvage title also. I live in Missouri so what you need to do in Ohio may be a little different. I bought my truck in Tennessee and brought it back here to repair. I had to get a form from the DMV (cost $29) and have the Highway patrol inspect the vehicle before I could license it. They require you show reciepts for parts you have purchased (both new and used) to repair the vehicle. They mainly are checking to make sure the VIN is correct and there are no stolen parts on the vehicle. After they check the vehicle, they sign off on the form all you have to do is take it back down to the DMV and your all set to get plates. Like I said, this is how it works here, your state may be a little different. It was really no big deal.

The only thing that they will probably check is to see the vehicle is road safe. Basically the suspension, all the lights, tires, no huge fluid leaks, are

ok on the vehicle. They will check the vehicle over like you're coming to register any other vehicle. They will check it over a little more. Like JTeague said check with the DVM first. Then have fun fixin.

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured that it would be a safety inspection, but I wasn't sure about the emissions test. If I buy this truck, hopefully I won't ever have (want) to sell it.

Be very careful and do your homework first. Some states require that you not only have all of the receipts for all of the repair parts, but also before and after pictures.

If someone didn't take the before pics, guess what creek you're paddling up. .

Thats a good idea. I figured that I would be taking plenty of pictures anyway. Woodsrat gave me the number of a guy that just went through all of this in Ohio.

Well, I finally got around to calling the guy. He was very nice and answered all my questions. Basically, he said that getting a truck inspected in Ohio was very easy. He told me that all he did was drop the truck off and wait for them to check it over. He said that there in no emmission check, and that he has a 5" straight pipe and they didn't say anything about it to him. He told me that basically all I need to have is all the reciepts for everything to document that there are no stolen parts on the truck. He said it is very easy to do and was well worth it.
