This is my 3 cummins I have had one of every gen and my 92 was supose to have 13 quarts my 02 was supose to have 12 quarts and my 06 was the same according to the book but I took 3 gal (12 quarts) to the dealer and told them to change the oil and when I went to pick it up they said they where 1 qt short and they got one for at the cost of $5. 00 :--) I was hot but I said to my self that mabey I was in the wrong but then I looked in the book and it says 12 but they will not do anything about it I checked it after it sat all day and it was over full but they will not drain any because they checked after I drove to the shop and it sat for 2 min whats every ones elses opinion thanks

When I picked my truck up new the oil registered on the dip stick 1/2 way in the checkered OK area. I asked if it was 1 qt low, they told me NO, 1/2 way is where it is supposed to be, takes 12 quarts. So, that's how many quarts I use at my oil changes and that's where it reads. Same info in the owner's manual & service manual. To correctly read the dipstick after shutdown/warm engine, you should wait at least 20 mins not 2 mins. Two mins is no enough time for the oil to drain down out of the engine into the pan. That is also what I was told that day. I could be wrong, but that is also what has been dicussed here and on other forums. I suppose you could establish a 2 min checkpoint on your dipstick, I would time it and do it right after a fresh oil change with warm oil, it would at least give you a relative point of reference in that timeframe. When I am traveling and fueling up I usually do the fuel first and then check the oil, that's about a 10 min checkpoint. I have found that the oil is close to the 20 min point, just slightly under the mark.

The owners manual says 12 quarts, not 13 quarts. However, I go by the fill guage on the oil dipstick. On all 3 CTD's I have owned it was perfect on the dipstick at 12 quarts.



In my opinion, they need to take the 5 seconds it will take to drain off 1 quart of oil and refund your $5.

12 quarts is correct. CDonaldson is also correct that they did not wait long enough before checking the level. Show them the owners manual and service manual if you have one. I also agree with DJennings that they need to remove that one quart and refund your money.

I put in 12 guarts (3 gallons actually), start it up, check for leaks, and drop the hood. If the engine took 12 quarts when it was built, then it won't all of a sudden require more oil some time later.

thanks to all for makeing me feel better on that even tho the dealer would not do any thing about it #@$%! but they will never have my business again and I let them know that but I am just a peon (so they think) I got them put on the watch list of places that rip off military personel :-laf

Beyond that, complaining over $5 is being a baby. You took the oil to them and cut into their profits, heck if you can buy the oil you should be able to change it:-{}

I totally disagree. This dealer is overfilling the engine which is a no no. If the dealer wants to charge an additional fee for using customer supplied products then do so, but be up front with the charge and do not over fill the engine. I pay a local garage a $15. service fee for changing the oil and filter in my truck. I supply the filter and oil so that I control the items being used and the garage provides a hoist and a proper place to get rid of the used oil and filter. I know the people at this place so I can chat with the service tech while the work is being done and mention little things like how important it is to prefill the oil filter and not fill the rear pig up to the plug hole as the correct full level is an inch below the plug hole. Could I crawl under my truck and do the work? Sure I could. Do I want to lay on frozen concrete and turn a wrench? It would take more then $15. to get my attention!

thats excatly why I took it to them their was 6 inches of snow on the ground and it was 10 above 0 out of the wind I normaly do all my own maint beings that is what I do for a liveing a maint tech for the army guard but I can not just pull in my truck in to a government shop that is the only reason for them doing the oil change and it will nver happen agian I will do all of my own from now on just like it was before
