I found a place in town that will do oil analysis with TBN for $11. 75 (First truck Center in Edmonton). They have an onsite testing machine, and can get your results in less than an hour. I was little skeptical so I bought a kit from Stavely Services for 16. 95(no tbn) to compare.

The truck had 33872km and 532 hours and the oil had 12500km and 182 hours. This oil was changed on March 4 and had been used since November. I changed the TP @ 5500km and 9000km. This truck has a AFE proguard 7 intake system.

Here are the results, the first numbers are from Staveleyservices and the second are from First truck Center (Updated on edit I had the columns

reversed )

Well it goes without saying that I won't be using the First Truck Center for oil analysis again.

Overall nothing to exciting. I will continue to change oil at the recommended intervals of 12,000km. Looks like the soot is under control. I not sure how much effect the Frantz is having on soot levels, but I am happy with only 1% soot, the oil can handle that.

Staveley Services sells a kit with TBN for $20, but you have to buy in quanties of 10, and they are only good for 2 years. I won't use 10 kits in two years. Anyone in Edmonton or Saskatoon, want to go in together on pack of 10 kits?

You can go to the Finning truck shop @ 16940 107 avw & purchase in singles or any quantity you want. Fill & lable when doing oil chg & drop off there & the results are mailed to you. Not sure what I paid but it did not seem unreasonable.

Here is mine with the Fleetguard oil filter and two UNI single stage air filters in my shaker hood for 20,800 kilometers. Results surprised me as I had all sorts of things happening with the frozen extended breather hose. I also had the shaker fill with snow overnite a coupler of times and had some major rains get at the filters too. I wanted to see what this would mean for the engine before I put it on the market. Overall I am quite pleased with the results.

My tests were done initially because I was concerned with my oil consumption on the prior oil change and the water in fuel light coming on all the time.

The water in fuel sensor was defective and I had that ice build up on the tank.

The oil consumption stopped shortly after I changed out oil and got the hose cut off. The high reading I had once was determined to be an error in reading the dip stick by a dip stick I had helping me that day. The dip stick was not pushed in all the way and the dip stick kept adding oil to bring it up to full with it aobut 1 inch away from being seated. Those air filters have done a great job.

Scotty, it's kinda hard to see, even looking at the screen with my large magnifying glass :p

I had to keep sizing it down for it to be accepted/posted.

silicon was 7ppm.

I was concerned with either fuel or coolant in the oil after having the breather hose freeze and pushing several liters of oil out. All came back good. I will be towing heavy again very soon and then I will know if I have to address any seals.

When I post analysis reports from Blackstone. I have to break them up into 3 separate sections to keep them readable. Other than that, just post the numbers in usual format:

Iron = 8 ppm

etc

etc

I have it in pdf, can that be posted on here?

I guess having it as a jpeg was not good. Probably should've posted it elsewhere anyway so as not to hijack this thread.

I got a CAT kit for my previous UOA. I don't like how they express the Soot levels. It is expressed as a percentage of the maximum allowable. The problem is that they don't tell you what the maximum allowable value actually is. Nobody I talked to on the tech lines could tell me what the maximum allowable value is. After a couple of days of searching, I was finally got an answer of 3%

You can also get the Stavely Services kits at various truck dealers in town, but none of them actually know anything about UOA's. They don't have a clue what TBN is or what is all is tested in the UOA's that they sell. I just want to avoid the frustration, and save a little money and buy my kits directly from Stavely from now on.

Thanks for posting that about the max allowable soot for the CAT kit! I have been wondering the same thing and got the same runaround as you when I called CAT. It almost made me want to change from CAT, but they are really convenient to use here in town.

Yes, 3% is max for soot levels. My last one taken with 31,500 on the oil and 40,000 on engine was reported as 0. 5 % soot

Only, 0. 5% soot after 31,500miles! Man, the pre 04. 5 engines run alot cleaner. I have a buddy that has a 03, and his oil looks cleaner(clearer) with 12,000kms, then my oil does immediately after I change it. Looks like you can go a long time without changing your oil. How often do you change you filters?

I took a cat oil sample before I installed my Frantz bypass and I had 1. 3% soot (43% of 3%) with only 4300km on the oil (16335 on the truck). I had less soot with almost 3 times the mileage on this last UOA, so I know my Frantz is having some effect, but it is probally undersized for this application. I don't really want to change it more often, I might even try changing it less, since I am changing the oil every 12,000km anyways.

Carl,

As I understand it, the "soot" percentage is the percentage of soot found in the sample, ie if a sample of 4 ozs. is taken from your sump for analysis, then the 3% figure would indicate 3 % of 4 ozs. would be the soot content.

Another thing that you must also consider when looking at soot levels, is the viscosity of the fluid, as soot will make the oil thicker, and (TAN) Total Acid Number.

I have changed my filters, (by-pass & full-flow) twice in the 40,000 miles. Oil has not been drained yet,
