for those using Delo 400, don't be alarmed if you see a sudden increase in Moly. I scratched my head for a while wonder how someone might sneek a little slick-50 into my oil, when I realized that the new Delo 400 formulation for the EGR engines might account for this. sure enough. Chevron confirms -- you should see up to 240 ppm Moly. This is for the new CI-4+ rating.

All distributor stock since July 7 has been CI-4+ and Chevron is no longer producing the older CI-4 product. be aware of old inventory

Oil Sample

I guess I'll never find out on my first ever oil sample I sent to Blackstone. Sent off 8/16/04 an they still have not received it. Good ole reliable U. S. Postal Service must have lost it. First time ever had anything lost in the mail. Just my luck. Well I'll try again in about 3K, Bummer.

Usps

Hope the oil sample didn't go through Houston, PA. The US Post Office and all mail in it was distroyed by the recent flash flood we had. What a mess!! Just missed losing my 5th wheel by about 20 minutes due to the very fast rising water. I got it hooked up and within 20 minutes after I left, the water was about 5 feet deep where I had it parked. The water came up so fast. I know this is off thread but it is possible your oil sample could have been caught up in some of the sorry weather we have had this year.

The additive found in this oil is used as an antioxidant. To keep from having oil thickening. It has been used over the years in varying amounts. Because EGR engines (the new big ones) have a higher operating temp oils need to resist oxidation. Moly is actually short hand for molybdenum disulfide. most are familiar for it's use in grease.

Slick 50 uses PTFE. A different type of solid additive. Most commonly found on frying pans!

no EGR yet on the cummins. its the oil that is prepared for this eventuality. Fords and Chevies both have EGR.

So , is it my understanding that if I do not have EGR, I don't want or need CI-4?? Marty 2004 calif (L. O. ) Edge. .

The way I take it is, it's just reformulated to meet the EGR equipped vehicles with CI-4 rating, still ok to use weather you have a EGR valve or not.

And George that may very well be the case, that my oil sample became a flood victim. Just my luck, I was curious about that first sample.

It is a performance upgrade over CH-4. The oil starts with better base oil quality for convential. Dleno is correct in backwards compatible.

Better high temp protection

Higher soot loading capable

Better viscosity retention

Those are some of the benefits above CH-4.
