Got my first oil analysis back today and I would appreciate it if someone could explain this to me. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks,
Steve

How many miles on the oil?, What oil?, What is the Viscosity?, What is the TBN?, Soot?, Fuel%? Was there more information that Blackstone gave that you did not post?

I think that the average #'s that Blackstone gives are a bit high. I don't like to see Silicon above 10 ppm and Iron should be much less than the average that they give.

Given the numbers that you posted, the oils look OK for extended usage. I would like to know how many miles are on each sample before I can say much more.

Sincerely, Kevin

Steve, to go with Chad's list here's Blackstone's list of the most common sources of these elements:

Aluminum: Pistons, bearings, cases (heads & blocks).
Chromium: Rings, a trace element in steel.
Iron: Cylinders, rotating shafts, the valve train, and any steel part sharing the oil.
Copper: Brass or bronze parts, copper bushings, bearings, oil coolers, also an additive in some gasoline engine oils.
Lead: Bearings.
Tin: Bearings, bronze parts, piston coatings.
Molybdenum: Anti-wear additive, some types of rings.
Nickel: Trace element in steel.
Manganese: Trace element, additive in gasoline.
Silver: Trace element.
Titanium: Trace element.
Vanadium: Trace element.
Boron: Detergent/dispersant additive, anti-freeze inhibitors.
Silicon: Airborne dirt, sealers, gaskets, anti-freeze inhibitors.
Sodium: Anti-freeze inhibitors, additive in some gasoline engine oils.
Calcium: Detergent/dispersant additive.
Magnesium: Detergent/dispersant additive.
Phosphorus: Anti-wear additive.
Zinc: Anti-wear additive.
Barium: Detergent/dispersant additive.

My Blackstone report gave these as the universal averages - on the left are from Chad's post, on the right are from my report: Wonder why there's such a variance in some of the elements from the same company?

7 Chromium - 2
39 Copper - 6
170 Iron - 23
167 Lead - 7
25 Aluminum - 4

Contaminant Metals:
30 Silicon - 8
161 Sodium - 11
? Potassium - ?

Multi-Source Metals:
22 Molybdenum - 8
27 Boron - 161

Additive Metals:
565 Magnesium - 478
1232 Calcium - 2208
1043 Phosphorus - 1065
1139 Zinc - 1209

Chad - a '72 340 Cuda! Cool. I took a very quick side trip to your page - will have to go back when I have more time. Looks like some good links.

Oil Man,
Here's the rest of the information.

Miles - 5500
Exxon - XD3
15W40
Fuel - 0. 5
Soot - <. 1
Water - <. 1
TBN - No value given

I didn't use Blackstone. Cummins sent this to Fleetguard Monitor.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve G,
Those numbers look good with that mileage. In fact you might be able to go longer based on what info you have. On your next oil analysis ask for a TBN# and then you will know if you can run it safely longer. Everything looks good.

Have a great day,
Kevin

I don't know about where you guys are but Caterpilar does them too. At least around here all the cat dealers. Since they work on truck engines too.

Steve G,

The following is a list showing what Cummins considers normal and high levels for the major wear metals. The first number is norm and second high levels.

Silicon 5 / 15
Iron 23 / 69
Copper 17 / 60
Aluminum 3 / 10
Chromium 2 / 6
Lead 13 / 40

total solids 2% / 4%
water % 0. 3 / 2. 0
coolant neg / pos
Fuel % 2. 0 / 5. 0

Blackstone has been extending a discount price of $16. 00 to members of the TST list. Maybe if you contact them and discuss the number of members on this list they will give that discount to us too?????
I have had my oil analized 3 times now in 35,000 miles. The last time I ran the Rotella T for 6500 miles. I sent in a sample and they replyied that everything was ok and to continue using this service interval. I was concerned that I had run it to long but with their blessings I feel better about streaching the change intervals out to 6000 miles.

Guys, the "universal averages" that Blackstone reports will vary according to the miles that you tell them that you had on the oil and the amount of makeup oil you may have added. The wear metals accumulate in the oil the longer it remains in use. That is why 24 ppm iron might be reported as average for a Cummins with 3K on the oil and 48 or so ppm might be reported as average for oil with 6K miles on it. The rate of wear metal accumulation is pretty constant with miles until the oil additives become depleted. Then the wear increases rapidly until you change the oil.

So when you report oil analysis results you always should include the total miles on the oil.

Calcium count

Just got my first oil analysis back from Oil Analyzers. All the numbers look really good; except three. My Calcium count is 4351, Aluminum is 12 and the Iron is at 85. I went 10000 miles on my 5-30 Amsoil. What do these numbers mean?

Thanks!!

Just Curious....

Patriot Diesel,

What brand oil did you use & how many miles on the oil?

Also, what was your silicon ppm? I see you have the BHAF and was just curious.

Steve

Additional Info

The above Cummins numbers are very helpful. Thanks 1tuffram. However are there any parameters for the other elements that are provided on the analysis sheet.

I just received my first analysis and would like to know how to use this information effectively. Does the solids value equally soot?

The following are my numbers, which look pretty good!

iron 25

chromium 1

aluminum 2

copper 0

lead 13

silicon 4

sodium 5**

antimony 1**

boron 124**

magnesium 0**

calcium 3791**

barium 0**

phophorus 1369**

zinc 1579

fuel . 5%

soot <. 1

water <. 1

I have 7000 miles on Shell rotella 15w40

Now, of the above elements with an ** next to them what are approrpiate value ranges and what are these numbers telling me.

One last question. Will my anti-mony number increase with bombing?? :D :D :--) :--)

Hey Iron,

Nice silicon #... Are you using the stock airfilter? My silicon was double yours @ 8ppm with my AFE air filter.

Also, what the he!! is antimony? I think that's what happens to my checkbook when I purchase my bombs for my truck! hehehe :D :D
