I got the results of my first oil analysis back today. I'm pretty darn happy with these #s. Wear metals are super low. The reason the Silicon reads high is because of the gasket maker I used when reassembling my gear housing. This sample was pulled at 5000 miles. The oil is Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 and I have my Gulfcoast bypass filter installed. Note that soot (insolubles) are nice and low.

Yep. I ran a Frantz on my 03 and liked it, but I didn't like having to change the element evert 2-3k miles. The Gulfcoast is a bit of a brute and element changes (haven't done one yet) will be messy, but I wanted the additional 6 qts volume and the extended element changes (I'm shooting for 10k).

I was never one to stay awake in chemistry class but isn't silicon sand?

I'm pretty sure sealant has silicone in it, and I don't think they're the same thing. I think silicon typically comes in through the air filter or maybe even from the engine block itself since cast iron blocks are cast using sand cores.

Is that GulfCoast Bypass filter made in Gulfport, MS... Just curious. There is a company just up the street here from where I work that says GulfCoast Filters Inc on the building and they make toilet paper sized and paper towel sized paper oil filters and assemblies..... The paper comes from a Georgia Pacific plant in Louisiana that makes toilet paper. I know cause we ship it for them and have delivered paper to these guys here... . I wonder if its the same people... . Never thought to ask. . Doh...

Yes, that's the place. I was worried their place might have been wrecked by Katrina, but apparently they came through it ok.

Nope, they are okay. They're about 4 miles from the water straight north on Canal Rd, Off MS Interstate 10, exit 31 North. About a ½ mile from where I work. A lot of trees down and some roof missing but okay. They just got their roof fixed about a week ago. Everything about 2 miles south of here is either "missing", destroyed or in shambles. Its a real mess. From the water to ¼ mile inland has been just removed. It will take years just to clean this up. If you see it you wouldn't recognize it. Its like the moon. There are still over 12,000 people here with no home. Most of the businesses were near the water. Most of them are gone... .
