I turned my oil in after 8500 mi. , winter travel with trips no shorter than 15 mi. , most 60 or more. 3000 of these miles were towing. Plugged in anything under 20*F, never let warm up before putting off slowly. 3894 filter used.

This is my first oil analisis. Next time I change it I will go 6K, spin on a new filter filled with the good stuff and go another 6K. Just wondering at 36K on the rig now if these numbers look normal?

Paul

Those are excellent numbers. They are equivalent to the best I have seen with Delvac 1 and Amsoil HDD. This is another example of Group III base oils doing the job. I think your plan of 12K with a filter and a fresh quart at 6K makes sense. It would be helpful if you had TBN info next time. The viscosity is holding up fine, so either oxidation or TBN will be the limitation of the oil.

How long did it take to put on the 8500 miles?

Lee, It took 5 months to rack up the 8500 mi. What's TBN, I did not find that info on the analysis sheet they gave me. The company who did the analysis is S. O. S out of southwest Canada.

I have been using Oil Analyzers, which is associated with Amsoil. I get the kits through SledPuller on this board, but any Amsoil dealer can supply them. They recently switched to a different sub contractor for the lab work, which some folks are not very happy about. They measure TBN (total base number) as part of the general workup. Most other outfits like Blackstone charge extra for TBN. TBN is a measurement of the oils residual ability to neutralize acids that result from combustion and oil oxidation. Most diesel oils start out with a TBN of 10 or higher. Once the TBN hits 0, acids can't be neutralized, sludge starts to form very quickly, corrosion accelerates, and most of the detergents in the oil are depleted. If your level of oxidation is still below 100% of the allowed level, you TBN will be ok. But it is an indication of how much life is left in the oil.

There must to be more CTDs in Reno than any other place on the planet.

I get mine at "CAT". Boise, Id. They charge 10. 00. I use Amsoil and change at aprox. every 9000 miles. Your # are right on target.

I was getting those type # running "dino" delo oil at 3000 miles.

Syn oil is far better for turbo charged engines.

Yesterday syn oil's were out according to Cummins. Now that Valvoline has 5 -40 syn oil for diesels its OK. UMMM...
