Oil Capacity? manual and dipstick

My friend has a 1994 12 valve with 160,000 miles on it. It sometimes will burn through a quart of motor oil in 1,000 miles. Other times it won't burn hardly any. He runs Amsoil 15w40 fully synthetic. The motor is basically stock, and it runs perfectly. However, is it normal to burn this much oil?

1 qt in 1000 miles is quite a lot.

I'd pay perticulat attention to the way he checks his oil.

1 Does he park it in the same place when checking it?

2 Is it sitting for a good long time (overnight)?

Just seems strange to me that it "sometimes" uses oil?

Eric

PS My dipstick tube seems to have some play in it. I always push it in before pulling the stick for a sample.
