I changed the oil for the first time today in my 05. 11 quarts brings it just above the top "full" mark on the dipstick. Should I add quart 12? Per the owners manual it seems to take 12. I assume the dipstick should be higher, and the Cummins isn't going to care about a little too high oil level on the stick?? Help the diesel rookie out here.

Did you fill the oil filter before install. I know on the older ones the filter takes about a quart. Start it up let it run for a minute and then check it again. Were you sitting at a funny angle? If you were maybe it all didnt drain out. After you run it a bit check it and if its ok it should be fine.

MLimpert,on my 03 to have the correct oil level reading, I must wait a good 30 min. for the oil to drain down into the oil pan. 11 quarts total(oil filter)

included. To much oil is not good either. Jerry

I've heard of this "drain down" period. I don't buy it. I've never checked oil first thing in the morning without warming a motor first! Shut her down and check the oil.

12 quarts it is for me!

You're right... It takes 12. I drove around more today, and the oil level came back down a bit on the dipstick. I added quart #12, and everything looks good.
