I just serviced my new (to me of course) '97, and during the install I realized I only had 9 quarts. I was thinking the oil capacity was 11 quarts, and the dipstick shows about 2 quarts low. The owner manual shows a capacity of 10 quarts however. So which is it? Either way, I'm going to have to place an Amsoil order on Monday.

Eleven quarts total. One quart for the filter and one quart will be slow to drain out of the P7100 pump. I let mine sit in my garage over night before I change oil so everything drains properly. Fill the filter before installing it. One thing to beware of is the little foil sealer at the top of the oil jug. Make sure a little piece of that doesn't get in the filter. There have been cases of piston cooler nozzles being pluged with a tiny piece of foil. It's a rare thing, but it does happen.

Thanks Joe. I wonder why the owners manual shows 10 quart capacity? I didn't think they had changed the capacity between the '97 & '98 though. I always pre-fill the filter.

I dump the full 3 gallons into it... . and the filter, of course..... so far, so good. I have a leaky rear-main seal, though... . and after 3k miles it's down to the 'full' mark, but it is normally a little above with a fresh charge of oil.

Do NOT use the FRAM filters..... they are junk... plain and simple.

I pay like $8. 40 for a Mopar filter.....

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Somewhere in the book it will tell you it takes about an hour for the engine oil to drain out of the injector pump. It is supposed to hold about a quart. I guess if you do a "quickie" oil change, you won't want to wait for that oil to drip back into the pan. If you do it that way, then you only need ten quarts. I too usually pull the plug, & let it drain overnight, then refill in the morning. I've used the full 3 gal. too, with no problems. At nearly 140k, I go a full 6,000 miles on a change, and it's usually down a quart by then. Use a good Fleetguard Microglass, or Stratapore filter too, it's cheap insurance.
