I just changed my oil and for the second time I have drained out a little over 8 quarts even though the level was full before I started. I then changed the filter and added 11 quarts and it reads at the full mark. It should read 3 quarts over but doesn't. Anyone have a thought on this crazy deal?

Both... . I checked it before I started just to make sure it was up to the full (safe) line. Then when I was finished and put in 11 quarts it was at the same mark. Now how can that be. I have never measured my old oil after a change until the last one a few months ago and that's the first time this happened to me. But that time I did not check to see if it was full even though my truck has never required any oil to be added between changes which is great because it now has over 200k and runs great.

I've noticed this phenomenon on every car I've ever had. The filter probably holds over a quart so that's where some of it was.

I thought that too however I drained the filter into the oil drain pan and then poured all the drain oil back into 1 gallon containers and the total was 8 gallons... . this is weird.

My guess would be you are putting more than one gallon of used oil back into the gallon containers. Also, even a drained oil filter will still retain some used oil.

This is one of the Universe's great mysteries. Like how you can put matched pairs of socks in your washer and clothes dryer and end up with singles afterwards. Where did they go. . ?

I caught Bigfoot stealing one of my socks at one point.

I am wondering if that is who keeps replacing one sock with a much smaller one also.

I have been through the same thing, did some calculations about it a long time ago. A lot of waste in an oil change.

One gallon jugs will hold 6 quarts, they make them look bigger so we all feel we are getting a lot for our money. The filter will hold close to a quart after it is drained. You always spill some. of the 11 quarts you put in one quart will be wasted with what is left in each quart. Let one set for a while and you will find a half of an inch of oil at the bottom of each quart.

my thoughts the same there is alot of waste left in filter after it been drained. what you can do next oil change is do what I did and still do. I bought a cheap plastic bucket that held 3 gallons filled up the bucket to 11 qt mark. put a black pen mark on the outside of bucket for quick look when I change the oil. then take oil put on the lid and take to recycle. you will always be close to the mark it seems but never right on it. this is used oil which in a way is condensed. oil lose in filter. etc. if you dont want to do the bucket thing before you open up the new jug on next oil change find the oil line with bright light shining through the jug and mark it. you would be suprised how much lower in the bottle it actually is. this was already said but some jug's are smaller than they appear. (think that should be a bumper sticker slogan).
