word of caution. when changing your oil be sure you know where the drain plug gasket is. mine stuck to the pan, then fell in the old oil without my noticing it. i replaced the plug not noting the gasket wasn't there. filled with new oil, and didn't find the gasket til i was pouring out the old oil. so..... took a bath in oil, and lost a gallon of Rosmella getting the gasket back on the plug. :(
 
Mine must have done the same thing; however, I wasn't going to wade through the oil bucket to retrieve the gasket. I ended up just living with the slow drip until my next oil change, when I put on the HD plug.
 
Me too.......

How sad. I always empty thedrain pan into a 5 gallon bucket to take it away. Sat there for a couple of days till I decided to clean up. Noticed the gasket in the pan. To make matters worse I overfilled it after getting the gasket back on. Had to do it again :eek:



Gave me a chance to put a second transmission sensor in the mag pan though and lost a little there too. At least I was messy already.

embarrassed..

it embarrassses me to admit how dumb i felt. however, if it keeps one other member from doing the same thing, it'll be worth it. what a dumb bu%% i felt like. unfortunately, i was watching as the washer fell, and thought "what the heck, what was that splash?" then concluded it was just a change in the stream of oil as the volume decreased.

i was unwilling to tolerate the slo-o-o-ow leak--and believe me it does leak, til the next oil change.

i concluded i had just done a partial "exchange transfusion", after i had reinstalled the gasket, and laughed at myself. :D :D :D
 
HMMmmm - I never even noticed if there IS a detachable gasket on mine - I've changed the oil twice so far - no dips or other problems... :confused: :eek:



I *do* drain my oil into a regular drain reservoir, and any large objects coming out with the oil would be quite visible...

I never remove my plug anymore, just loosen it. It actually drains more oil out that way. Take the plug out all the way and let it drain all the way so it's not dripping, then put it in and you will see it start dripping.
 
It takes only one time to know this for the next change. Not ashamed to admit it. I realized the missing gasket when pouring the old oil out. I just suited up with a couple of garbage bags on my arm while removing the plug then handed it to a friend who put the gasket back on as I held the drain with my thumb. Less than 1 quart lost. -fjk
 
Dont feel so bad everyone. I once (in my youth) changed my dads oil in his Blazer. I poured 6 quarts of Valvoline into the engine, put the cap back on and stood there admiring my work. Then I noticed I was standing in a pool of oil coming from underneath the truck. I forgot to put the drain plug back in!!! Plus, I couldn't go and buy more oil cause I went and got all my supplies with the Blazer (which now had no oil in it). Dad had my truck for the day. Had to call a friend for a ride to Wal-Mart... plus get laughed at all the way there and back. I now triple check everything before I pour the oil in. So, forgetting a gasket is very forgivable. Hope that helps.
 
It's hilarious to see what happens when you remove the drain plug completely, letting the oil drain into one of those 15 quart WalMart drain pans with the caps & carry handle... . That little hole in the middle :D just won't let all the oil through fast enough.

Had a friend change his oil at my shop the other day. I wasn't thinking, had my mind on another customer's truck, and forgot to warn him about that stupid drain pan. :eek:

These trucks sure ruin a lot of clothes... ...

Come to think of it, there's a promotional idea for the shop! Hire the girls at the local strip bar for a boob & lube oil change day ! :D
 
not as much fun, but.....

tom, you might consider going to your local lumberyard, or home depot or,. . and buying a mortar mixing pan for a drain pan. rectangular and hold about 10 gallons. relatively easy to pour out of the corner into a used oil receptacle. the girls might even appreciate not getting oil on their plastic surgery scars. :D :D
