i have a 2001 ram with astock diesel ,i've been using valvoline premium blue since it was new . okay heres my problem it's getting harder to find . i'mdown to one store and there always out , i found some oil at my local farm supply store it's called mystik jt8synthetic blend it's sae 15-40 and it exceeds api service ci-4plus, ci-4,ch-4,cg-4,cf/sl,sj and the doughnut says sae15w-40 onthe bottom ci-4plus . has any one heard of this oil? and would it be okay to run in the cummins, the bottle says it,s good for diesel engines and gas engines??? also i've read tdr on analysis of lube oil and the way i understand the ci-4plus is what i want for the older engine, is there any thing i'm missing or not understanding thanks for yourtime guys.

I use (shell) rotella-t in my 01 cummins. I have been working in the oil field for 25 years. This is the only oil we use for the diesel eng. That are running generator 24/7.

Jnewcomer, i see you are new at tdr, go to the user control panel , and go to signature, leave info for your truck. It will help in the future. Later

I use Shell also, walmart sells cummins friendly 2. 5 gal jugs of it, enough to do an oil change, also my local walmart sells cummins oil filters too. Old test studys show Rotella has great anti-foam, and anti-ash properties.

My Autozones carry it by the gallon. Everyday. You can go to any Napa and order it from their warehouse next day. Plan ahead and order it to get you thru 2 changes at least. I wouldn't switch. Its out there. Just might take an order. Then later you can phone in the order. I special order Rotella 10W-30 from my Napa all the time for some gas engines I run.

And don't worry about CI-4 or CI-4Plus or anything. Just use whatever you get which will probably be CJ-4 now or very soon. I once had a long discussion about this and read the TDR article and all. Bottom line is that the CJ oils will provide great protection and show great oil analysis reports. Key is that CJ's do well with ULSD and don't need all the base of the former CI oils... since there is little sulfur now to combat what gets into the oil. CI's still have a sufficient base number. Its whats left at the change interval that counts.

Get your Valvoline even if you need to order it. I run Mobil Delvac and often buy it on sale like 8 gallons at a time. Last time it was buy one get one free. Thats $6/gallon. Couldn't pass that up.

And yes. . Mystic makes great oil. Especially some of their synthetics I believe. But those are expensive. I know alot of farmers that use Mystic. Our Napa carries it. As does Rural King. Any 15W-40 is going to be a diesel engine oil with the C rating on the API logo.

If you absolutely insist on running a CI oil... CAT, CaseIH and Deere sell CI-4Plus 15W-40's that are superb and work just fine in any diesel on road or off.

CJ-4 is for engines after 1-1-07. CI-4+ is generally considered a better oil but is very had to find and will be gone soon enough. You can still get Valvoline "Classic" Blue in 5 gallon pals thru NAPA - special order. I just got 30 gallons so I won't have to use CJ-4. The stuff you mentioned should be fine if that's what you wanta use. But Mystic is a Citco product which is wholly owned by Venezuela - Hugo Chavez - who is a decidedly anti-American communist dictator. If you wanta fund that, go ahead

I don't use Mystic. Or Citgo. Used to use Citgo gear oils. But like you said... I won't do it now. For that very reason. But it is a good product line.

CJ-4 isn't just for 2007+ engines. It also satisfies previous ratings including CI4. And I too once thought CI's were better oils and I wouldn't use CJ's. Until I did some hard factual research as to why the need for CJ4 oils... and what they do (and don't do) for older engines. I've read some interesting articles suggesting CJ oils are in fact the superior oil. Only if diesel fuel was still higher sulfur would CI oils be considered far superior. Lubricating properties of CJ oils are superb as is the detergency.

But in reality... the average (and even above average) pickup owner with pre 2007 engines won't notice a thing whether they use CI-4, CI-4 Plus or CJ-4. 2007 and up guys want to stick with CJ-4 to prevent DPF fouling among other things.

J,

I currently and have been running Rotella T conv. for the past 110K on my 01. All autozones (as mentioned earlier) carry this oil and NAPA can order as well. Good luck.

Kind Regards,

oil change for 2001 dodge reply

I didn't know mystik was a citgo product i don't want to support that clown some of you guys said don't change from the valvoline ,what would be the danger of that???? also i will see about the ordering the premium blue but if it should be come unavailable the shell rotella is a better product for the stock diesel thanks J

I currently and since truck new used Delo and did not worry about if it was CI or CJ. Perhaps if you are going extended mileage between changes based on oil analysis it would make a difference this i don't know. Like others read all the talk and papers compare CI and CJ and think running CJ is ok. I would think all modern day oils are ok with perhaps synthetic better for cold weather operations.

There is NO danger in switching oil. Just saying... if your happy with Valvoline... why ruin a good relationship?

Otherwise I'd get some Delo, Rotella or Delvac. You can get those anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Your engine will purr right along for a million miles.
