Cummins recommendation in the 19+ Ram is 500 hours.

Okay. It’s not worth wandering off the page to cite non-pickup uses unless details known (was only point). Too many differences in apps.

The newer Class 8 I’ve been in looks like 1,500-hrs. Usually 60k miles for OFL.

Anything produced after Aug 30th of the calendar year is considered the following year model. Anything before that date stamp is usually considered a half model current year. At least that's what they used to do when I worked at dealers. Maybe someone else can chime in with current practice. JM2C

Does anyone know of any '98 Ford Powewerstroke's that exist??? Clearly, they got it right in 2003 lol!!!

I purchased my new 2009 in October of 2009... Dealerships were wanting to throw these things away to make room, so I got a pretty good deal IMHO!!! Lately, I've been seeing 1st and 2nd gen's going for almost what I paid for my '09!

This one was my first, and last new purchase, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used newer one that was cared for... Pop the hood and see a Fram oil filter=NOPE!!!

EDIT: Service interval for oil doesn't mean the same as it used to 20 years ago... Quality oil and filters means a lot more, when time is involved.

The DD 5 and 8 series are up to 18 months/1800 hours. Those engines have some pretty new tech compared to the ISB tho.

I'm pretty sure that one of the knuckleheads from my yard could kill one in a few weeks lol!!!

1800 hours is impressive, but dirty, dusty oilfield work will still need around 500 hours IMHO! Not so much for oil, but grease and other things that road trucks will NEVER SEE!!!

500 hours and 15-20 L of oil makes more sense than 500 hours and 11 L of oil IMHO. I just use Rotella T6 5w40. I guess I should do an oil sample next time. I’d be more comfortable at 500 hours with a bypass filter setup. I have a sneaky suspicion that if I had a need for engine warranty they’d deny it if I had a bypass filter. Hopefully they don’t think my oil pan heater is going to cause a failure…

I ran a bypass on my 05 and don’t on my 18.

With modern oils and filters they aren’t nearly as effective as they were on older oil and filters, such as the CH and earlier oil era. CI oils started have additives that combatted soot thickening, making it very difficult to filter out even with a bypass. Fast forward to CK oils and those additives are even better. This is why oil stays jet black on current trucks, with or without a bypass.

3 gallons for 6.7L is a decent ratio, engines that use more oil have more displacement and often more power. It’s all relative.

No reason to be scared of 500 hours with cheap oil, and T6 isn’t cheap. Do an oil analysis and you’ll see that it’s not necessary to change the oil prior to 12 mo/15K miles/500 hours.

On my 2018 CTD, I only do around 8k-9k miles per year and so far, I've been changing it every 6 months with Rotella T5 or T6 (I probably should just stay consistent with one of them). The book mentioned doing ever 6 months / 15k miles / I forget the hours recommended. Either way, I was doing 6 months since it was the shorter of the listed ranges.

I'm very tempted to just go with a 12 month interval - 6 months just feels like I'm throwing away good oil. I do use a Fleetguard Stratapore filter. Seems the consensus around here is that going 12 months would be just fine.

No need to do 6mo, 12 should be just fine, I always did 12mo or 5~6k miles on my 04 HO and never had a problem and that was running T4.
