I believe for normal driving conditions, not much towing, it's 7,500 miles. Towing and heavy use, it's half that. I change my oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles and the fuel filter every other oil change.

oil change

According to Chrysler you are supposed to change it when the oil change required comes on the overhead. The truck monitors driving conditions and the video they just sent us said it monitored soot levels in the oil as well. If you drive it around town more than the highway you will need to change it more often. My light has been coming on between 3-4k

as long as you have a dpf on your truck you will not make it to 7500 miles. but there might be that one or two of yall that can, but the fact is that diesel gets in the oil during the regen process. when there is 7% fuel in there the change oil light comes on. but put a dpf delete kit on and you are golden. i have about 7000 miles on this oil. i never hit over 4k miles with the dpf on, dump the cans and straight pipe it.

So how does the truck monitor the fuel in the oil level? How does it know when it gets to 7% I thought over 1-2% was high. In the past I thought the computer monitors driving conditions and calculates when the oil needs to be changed.

with the DPF delete kit did your fuel mpg go up? it seems we would be doing the environment a favor to remove them and get better mpg and use less oil

My "Oil change required" message just showed up this week... 1st time... at 4450 miles. I've been thinking about adding a bypass filter. If fuel in the oil is the determining factor, then a bypass filter probably won't help to extend the amount of miles between changes, will it?

There is no sensor to check the oil condition on the 6. 7. The engine controller has an algorithm that keeps track of duty cycle and makes its best guess on when the oil has reached the maximum level of fuel/soot/acid/moisture etc. and it is time to change it. It is not exact, but so far from those that have done oil samples it appears to be pretty close.

I just got back my latest uoa from Blackstone with 8133 miles on oil. They recommended going to 9000 miles next. Since I just switched to shaeffer's I will pull a sample early just to be sure. It showed 3% fuel in sample.

Like it has been said by others the Oil Change Required message is based on an ECM algorithm which so far according to my oil analysis on every oil change it is right on the mark. The Excessive Soot contamination really contaminates the oil. A Bypass filter will help the situation, I just got my Spinner II installed. Finding room for anything under the hood on the 6. 7 is a challenge. Oil is cheap, Engines are not.

EPA Mandate

The reason for the question was to figure cost of a new truck. With the higher cost for the diesel option, lower economy and higher maintenance the EPA has done a good job of trying to outlaw diesels. I plan to run mine for a while longer and maybe the manufaturers can beat the EPA at it's own game. DW
