I've recently performed my first eng. oil change and would like to get rid of the "Oil Change Required" message . My recollection is that it involves a combination of turning on the ignition while stepping on the throttle and possibly swinging a dead chicken about while while reciting an oath. I wasn't able to find a reference to the procedure in the FAQ . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please disregard

I found the needed information in the most unlikely place, the owners manual.

For the benefit of others, one simply turns on the ignition without starting the engine and depresses the accelerator fully three times within ten seconds. This should clear the message, as it did in my case.

If you change your oil before the message appears, will this still reset the oil change to zero?

No. You or a technician must reset the oil change function in the computer. The procedure is in your owner's manual and quoted above.

Remember, you may make the payments or may have written the check that purchased the truck, and your name may be on the registration and title, but the truck is owned and managed by the computer. You must always remember to please the computer. If you offend the computer it can display insulting coded messages or even shut down the truck and force you to walk.

HB - What I meant was will doing the reset procedure ( turn on the ignition without starting the engine and depresses the accelerator fully three times within ten seconds) reset the oil change counter if the oil change message has not appeared. I changed my oil last week without the computer telling me to (no overhead message), and I want to tell the computer to start counting over.

As long as you do the procedure the oil change reminder will reset, even if you do not get a "change oil now" message.

Does anyone know if removing the battery cables will inadvertently reset the ECM's march toward setting the oil change required light?

I changed my oil and filter at 5,000 miles but did not reset the oil change monitor function because I wanted to see when the computer would call for an oil change based on my driving habits.

Now my truck has just over 9,000 miles and it has still not displayed an oil change required light.

A couple weekends ago I was installing a new wiring harness to provide a seven pin trailer receptacle forward on the bed in addition to the rear mounted plug and disconnected the batteries to avoid throwing any sparks.

I'm wondering why my ECM is still not calling for an oil change.

I used 10,000 mile oil change intervals on both of my previous Dodge Rams because I was running 14,000 miles/month. Maybe the ECM on my new truck knows this? No, just kidding.

I'd swap the oil change reminder for a regeneration active warning like my edge has. That to me is more important.

Do you actually think Dodge wants you to know how often your truck regens? They don't tell you on purpose. Mine regens every 60 - 100 miles. I love driving down the road watching dollar bills fly out my tailpipe. :{. I would love to try one of those dpf delete kits but I am too paranoid about the feds, the cops and the secret tree hugger police here in CA.

Oil Change Message Reset

So how does one know that it really 'reset'? It doesn't always accept it the first time and even tells you in the manual to repeat the process if it didn't clear the message. Another one of those things that makes you go hhhhhmmmm.

To be certain you can look at the "miles since oil change reset" (or something like that) in the StarSCAN tool. What, you don't have a StarSCAN at home?:-laf I usually do the pedal thing a few times after a oil change just to be sure that it resets.

My oil change command seems to have a mind of its own! I gave the engine 2000 miles after leaving the dealership and then did my first oil change. At 7000 I let the dealer change the oil and they didn't turn off the "change oil message, I had to do it myself. Two different times the overhead has called for and oil change. I just reset and keep driving. I love everything about my 07. 5 3500 except mileage and computer readout that seem uncalled for. Jim Larsen 18,000 miles so far.

... I'm wondering why my ECM is still not calling for an oil change.

I have a little over 16K on mine and I still haven't seen a light telling me anything. Do the CC's do that?

I had the oil changed at 5300 miles and at 6800 the Change oil light came on. I wonder if there is both an engine oil test and a time test. My truck was in the shop for two weeks of the last month, but I sure wouldn't think I need an oil change every 1500 miles.
