So for 20 years I owned a 1996 5.9 that I bought new. I changed the oil every 4K like clock work. I sold it last year because I found a 2007.5 with 27,100 miles on it. I have kept the same routine with 4,000 mile oil changes. I changed it 2200 miles ago and now am getting the message "oil change required now". Does this just pop at preset intervals? Or does it have something to do with the DPF and actually needs changed now even though it's only been 2200 miles?

It pops up every 7500 miles or so based on miles AND calculated fuel dilution based on how many and how long the regens are.
If you didn't reset it after your last like change then it came on based on the last reset mileage.

OIL CHANGE INDICATOR - RESET
To reset the "Oil Change Required" indicator (after performing the scheduled maintenance) refer to the following
procedure:
• 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start engine).
• 2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
• 3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

The 07 6.7's very rarely go to BOOK mileage unless they are NOT any short trips or many cold starts etc.The reminder looks at duty cycle not just miles. In So Cal I rarely sa any trucks that went past 5k.

I'm currently at 7053 miles on this oil change (I'm picking up a new trailer up north and needed to check the mileage before the trip) and even when stock I would go to the 7500 interval. Granted I drove all hiway before retirement but it would go the distance. After retirement it's mostly around town and several road trips over the year but I'm (normally) only driving it 6-7k a year now.
This is the first time in many years that I need to change the oil before the summer towing season.

Since you just got the truck and do not have a history on maintenance reminder I would have at least two oil samples done. Do one now that it hasn't been changed yet. Depending on what you see on this sample you can judge when to run the second sample.
