Any special tools to get filter off and change oil. Standard oil filter wrench ? Sorry if this seems dumb but I get it X-mas eve and want to be ready. What oil 15/40 Rotella good for NYC weather now? I use it in my rough terrian forklifts.

Dog, you need a 3/8" sqaure drive to get the drain plug out. It is actually metric, but a 3/8" extension works fine. Lots of guys have had a trainwreck of a time getting the factory filter off. It is way too tight from the factory. You might make the dealer loosen it so you can hand tighten it before you leave with it. I have taken mine off with gloved hands and reinstalled it that way every single time, so I have no idea what type of wrench fits or works the best. Hope this helps.

EDIT: Rotella is fine, have run it all winter in WI for a couple years. Just plug it in when it gets real cold (20* or lower for me) and you will be fine.

I have used a regular type oil filter wrench. It takes a little finnese but works. Last change I used a fabric strap wrench which was much easier. The only drawback to the Rotella oil is stinky blowby. That only lasted the first 1000 miles or so. Have fun with your diesel. What a Christmas present!:D

trick

To minimize spillige from the oil filter put a zip lock bag around the filter;) You might need a cheeter pipe to pull the drain plug:eek:

About the drain plug....

I recommend you don't use a torque wrench on the drain plug. I did once - torqued it to the 40 lbs spec. I had a heck of a time breaking it loose the next time - way too tight. I just go by feel now - no problems.

Additionally, use caution with a filter wrench around the alternator. It is somewhat easy to short-out the system on one of the studs. My dealer did this and let my wife drive off without owning up to their error.

BTW, the bag around the filter is a fantastic idea, catches every drop of oil.

best of luck with the new toy.

Dont forget to use either Dodge Factory Oil Filters (available at your dealer @$10-$12 or Cummins Fleetguard Brand "Stratopore" filters (available at Cummins distributors or Service Centers)!

Both of these Filters are suitable,

the Fleetguard stratopore being about the best available

for your truck.

Steer clear of FRAM!!

Oil Change

15-40 Rotella is fine, but we have had better luck with 15-40 Delo in our big trucks. h

It's a personal choice, but I like Delo.

I use a large pair of slip joint pliars, 16 inch, with the jaws around the rolled edge of the filter right where it screws into the mount. Be careful to not short the alternater stud though... It will really wake you up.

I bought a craftsman 12" (4" OD) chain wrench and that has worked the best for me. I had the oil filter pliers for the first couple of changes, but I can't get them to hold on right. I don't know what the deal is with mine, but the filter is always tight when I take it off. I turn it the 3/4 turn past hand tight and lube the seal, but it is always tight.

Drain valve

Get a drain plug vavle from www.genosgarage.com . unless you like a bath in black oil:( What's up with a new '01. 5, I did not realize there were some left. I've had my '02 for a month now. After it is broke in(10,000 miles) I recommend Amsoil 15w-40 HDD, until then Rotella is a good as any, IMO:)

diesel DOG throw that drain plug away a go to Geno's and get any they offer in the fall catalog page eight I got the heavy duty plug w/9/16 hex head and saves myself alot of problems, nice x-mas gift my wife got mine for my birthday

I'm not trying to argue with you but CAT makes (or has made) their own brand of oil. It is called DEO (for Diesel Engine Oil). It is blended for them by the Mobil corporation. I would imagine they factory fill their engines with their DEO instead of DELO. If this is not the case, it certainly is interesting that they don't.

diesel dog:

on the strap wrench, yes, but go to sears and buy one of those that come as a set. They are non-metaltic(?), another words they words you won't short out the alt. The work great. You have most likely seen them on tv. Leave the small one for your wife to open jars and stuff. then she won't bother you. :D :D

on the oil, if you are in the C O L D country you might use a 5w30 synt; but otherwise the Rotella T15w40 is fine. I peersonally use Cummins Premium Blue 15w40. It is about $10. 00 per gallon.

There is no way I would pay what Amsoil wants for theirs; and the change time is the same.

Tighten your filter about !/2 turn after snugging; if it leaks, tighten some more; so next time you might not need a wrench:D

good luck

I also use the CUMMINS premium blue by Valvoline.

It is also what Cummins fills your ISB's with before they leave the factory.

I also agree with GLASMITHS on the Amsoil statement!
