Oil Change

How long will it take the oil to trun black after it is changed? I had my oil changed yesterday and drove it home and parked it. It was a 9 mile trip. I went and checked it today to see what the level was so that I could see how much it would increase before the next change. the oil looked as black as it did when I took it to have it changed. It had 7,000 miles on it since last oil change.

Mine didn't turn that black quite that quick. If it is truely that black in 9 miles My guess is they didn't really change the oil.



My 2010 even with the EGR plugged in the oil turns dark after 100 miles, black after 500 miles.

My trucks have quickly turned black. I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it.

Is the oil filter new? Is it a MOPAR or Fleetguard product?

The 6. 7 will turn the oil coal black the first time you start it!!

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm about 1500 miles into my first oil change with the FS2500 and my oil is still black since the moment it hit the oilpan.

All diesels turn the oil black as soon as you start them b/c of the sulfur in the fuel. It means nothing.

Third injection event on on CR motors causes this even without an EGR system.

This is grossly inaccurate, today's diesel is Ultra Low Sulfur fuel demanded by the EPA. The closed crankcase and EGR are the main causes for the black oil, not to mention the extra fuel dumped into the exhaust stroke to clean the DPF. Non emission diesels oil will stay cleaner longer than today's diesels.

My 01 would be jet black within a couple hundred miles, never used one drop, and never had a problem with the engine the entire time I owned it.



I think its normal. I wouldn't worry about it.

Not ALL turn black. At 3k on my oil you can still see thru it on the dip stick. My truck is a 98 12V with 350k on it. I always drain the oil overnight. My 81 vw diesel did turn black right away.

It is the soot, and it's even worse on new emissions-compliant trucks. What's the DPF for? It's to catch all that horrible soot so it doesn't hurt the environment. But apparently it's AOK to dump that soot right back into your cylinders, where the particles can make their way into your oil. Nevermind the carbon deposits that rapidly build up in the EGR cooler, and hopefully the carbon doesn't crack and flake, dumping chunks of carbon into your cylinders.



I installed a bypass filter recently, and I can't wait to see how my next couple of oil changes turn out. I'm hoping that with the EGR and DPF deleted and the oil filtered down to 2 microns that I'll see cleaner oil.
