Did you guys or girls (want to be PC ) have any easy solution for taking out oil filter ? Did they have special wrench for it ? Not so much space around it to use my oil wrench.

My is 01. 5 2500 4x4.

M:rolleyes:

I use the normal oil filter wrench of long ago that has the metal band with a handle that pivots. You have to be careful not to touch hot wires on the alternator. Remove the turbo/airfilter hose to give you more room to work. Some put a freezer bag around the filter before they remove it to catch the oil which will spill. I pull the oil pan plug and after a couple of hours go remove the filter which is not as full of oil as it would be if you do it right away.

sometimes the first filter removal can be a bear. it was rumored that DC had an out of sorts gorilla installing the filter on the new engines for awhile. some have resorted to strap wrenches. mine was a bear, the first time. finally responded to a BFPSP (Big Fun Pair of Slipjoint Pliers):D as said, watch the B+ post on the rear of the alternator. on your 2001, should have a rubber boot to insulate it. if you short it , have to replace the alternator fuse in the PDC, 140 amp, i think... ... .

Used a strap wrench and a breaker bar. Learned it on this site. I don't remember who, but someone had a website dedicated to it and it made it very easy.

The first one was the toughest. I have problems occasionally getting the new one to start threading correctly. It has to be just right. Once you get it straight it goes right on the threads.

Oil filter removal

I had alot of trouble getting my first filter off. After using all the normal tools without success, I had to drive a screw driver threw the filter itself. The filter had been screwed on far to tightly by the OEM. I rotated the filter 3 revolutions before I could rotate the filter (with much effort) with my hands. I was very careful to miss the filter threads with the screw driver. I found out later after doing some other maintenance that removing the turbo intake boot opens the whole world up as far as getting to the filter. Removing the rubber boot is very simple and adds less than a minute to the entire task. Hope this helps a bit.

In addition to the above posts, I put a small garbage bag under my filter before I remove it from the truck to catch any wayward oil and I also put it over the back side of the alternator to give me some protection from the hot leads. I also fill my oil filter 3/4 of the way full with new oil before I install it. That darn thing holds alot of oil so I figure it would take the truck a while to pump that much oil, so I give it a headstart on building good oil pressure. Mine is a 2001 and I heard all the stuff about the filter being put on extremely tight. Mine was pretty tight but using a strap wrench and breaker bar, it came off. I was also just getting over 2 broken wrists from a dirt bike injury and I managed. The key is a strap wrench and breaker bar.

After trying a bunch of different filter tools I use an oil filter strap wrench. Crack the filter loose with it, than from what I learned from one of the gents on the site, I slip a large plastic zip lock bag over the filter from the bottom of it. Unscrew the filter with one hand will holding the bag with the other. Bag catches the oil and oil filter. Zip up and take it out of the engine bay. Neat and clean. no more messes.

To put a new filter on, fill with a quart of oil, and I use a latex surgical glove on the hand to tighten the filter hand tight.

I have a pair of marks on the filter mount I made with a permant marker. After I install the new filter I put a pair of marks on the filter in line with the marks on the filter mount. This way it an easy check to see if it becomes loose. It doesnt ever seem to loosen, but become tighter!. . I put it on hand tight. . but I need the strap wrench to get it off.

Taking off the air intake tube between the turbo and filter box makes things a whole lot easier when doing a filter change.

I also found that it was well worth buying Geno's heavy duty drain plug. I tend to change my oil a lot, and the stock drain plug was getting booggered up. . the last time I did it I had a hard time getting it off. Thankfully I bought Geno's heavy duty drain plug just before that. . cause the stock one wasn't going to come off again.
