Gonna be changing the oil and filter before long. Seems like it would be easy to buy 3 gallons and dump it all in (one in the filter) instead of 2 gallons and then measuring out a couple quarts.

I thought I saw somewhere here that you can dump in the full 3 gallons but I can't find it. If it will create a problem, I will not do it. Any comments??

Robin,

Engine holds 11 quarts with the filter. I find it easier to pour 1 quart from the gallon container into a quart container and then pour remainer ofl three gallon jugs into the engine. Suggest you don't put 12 quarts in engine.

Right or Wrong?

But I have been putting a full 3 gallons in all 5 of my previous trucks with some 240k miles and have had no oil leaks or blue smoking or other problems that I have seen that you might think would happen. I am not telling you TO do it, that is up to you all I can say is I have not had any problems doing it.

FWIW

11 qts or 3 Gals....

I have been using the full three gallons since it was new in '99 and have had no problems. I hated the last qt just laying around till the next oil change. One extra qt. in a pan that size isn't going to raise the level very much. You also have one extra qt of cooling capacity in the motor.

I would not do it, :-{} when I did it with mine the clutch started sticking (would not disengage) like some oil was leaking out the rear main. so I drained a qt back out and in short order clutch was working fine again. just my 2cents worth

I always put the full 3 gallons in. If I am not mistaken, the oil pan holds 11 quarts and the filter holds 1 for a total of 12.

FYI: After I change the oil in my truck I always check the dipstick and it is always dead on the full line and never over full according to the dipstick.

Full 3 Gallons of Delo

Me to or also I guess; use the whole 3 gallons. No problems to date with the extra quart in the crankcase.

I'll stir the pot...

10 quarts including 1 in the filter gets my '99 to the top of the full mark on the dipstick. It remains there until it is time to change it again. :p

Now my '92 takes an even 3 gallons (12 qts) including 1 qt in the filter to do the same.

On both trucks, I fill to get the level to the top of the dipstick. No more. 135,000+ miles on the '99 and 240,000+ miles on the '92 with no problems.

:D

Blow By Bottle

Removed my blow by bottle about 15,000 miles ago and haven't been able to find any drips of oil on my concrete driveway yet. Did the clear hose trick which many of the members here do. Was very careful to make sure a continuous downhill slop was maintained.

Extra quart of oil has not been a problem to date BUT it sure is nice to not have to change that bottle every oil change. :p

Three gallon minimum

This is something that you will see that i talk about a lot (see sig).

I "overfill" everything. Truth is, is makes so little a difference that it won't hurt anything.

I can't explain some people's clutch issues, but I know of no person who has had ANY bad things happen as a result of the extra quart. i also know of no person who can explain to me HOW overfilling by ONE quart will cause any kind of problem.

Just dump in the 3 gallons and be done with it-- you are completely safe.
