Oil coming down ?

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Thanks Genos II.

Drove a new Jetta TDI.

Oil seems to be headed down a bit (lol) If it gets there, does anybody remember what diesel was when oil was "only" $100/bl ?

I was looking through some back issues of Transport Topics earlier. As you can imagine, fuel prices are front page news to a magazine owned by the American Trucking Association and whose content is dedicated entirely to the transportation business.

The October 1, 2007 edition said: Avg diesel prices were $2. 964 on Sept 17, 2007, and rose to $3. 032 as of Sept. 24, 2007

Six months later, the March 17, 2008 issue said: "Diesel Jumps to 3. 819"

Four months later, July 14, 2008, the headline was: "Diesel Increases to $4. 727"

One week later, the July 21, 2008 edition said: Diesel Rises 3. 7c to $4. 764

Pretty insane in my view. I know the price is dropping now that the President removed his order prohibiting offshore drilling. It would drop far more, and much faster, if Congress would get off their duff and follow suit.

My personal view is that any of the leadership that prevents a vote on the issue, and any Congressperson or Senator that fails to vote for lifting the ban should be replaced immediately.

There's an election in less than 90 days where we can accomplish that.

There's a saying that "We get the kind of government we deserve. " If we fail to act when the opportunity presents itself (less than 90 days) we'll deserve the far higher prices we'll soon see.

I was listening to a Republican senator today on Rush defending a bi-partisan bill to open up drilling in four states, but only at the state's discretion and not within fifty miles of the coastline. Rubbish. Anwar's out too.

Saxby Chambliss was that idiot Senator's name. I guess there's more to a name than meets the eye ... er. . EAR!

Whose brilliant idea was it to prohibit drilling unless its more than 50 miles offshore? I'm old enough to remember a 12 mile limit even for considering it to be a part of the US! Five miles out and you're over the horizon unless you're standing on a mountain or flying in a plane, at which point 50 miles isn't out of sight either.

Why leave out the most easily attainable crude? The answer is that the Dems and their RINO colleagues don't want us to have the oil! They think that cheaper fuel will ultimately stall the conversion to higher priced alternatives (they're right about that) but it seems the answer there instead of choking off the supply andsending all of our $$$$ to our enemies would be to simply charge higher prices for the leases, artificially keep the price up and use the proceeds to fund the construction of alternative power --- like nuclear --- for instance. Keep that $$$$ in the US and use it to get us out of this mess!!

The reason oil is preferable to every other source of hydrocarbon fuel is power density. There's more power in a lesser volume of product than in any other source, except nuclear. The infrastructure is already in place to utilize our own crude, refine our own products and distribute it to the populace.

If the government were to do as I suggest, and use the proceeds to defray the costs of new, safe nuclear power we could be out of this energy problem within 10 years and use the offshore wells as the bridge to that energy independent future.

Then, the power generated from the nuclear plants could be used to separate the crude from the oil shale, which would give us secure and virtually limitless liquid fuel for hundreds if not thousands of years, assuming other alternative sources (wind, solar, tidal, hydrogen) come to viable fruition.

The cheap and virtually limitless supply of non-polluting electrical energy from nuclear plants could also be used to crack water into Hydrogen and water which could then be used as a clean, mobile power source. The energy in-efficiency of electrolysis wouldn't matter a whit if the power to do it came from cheap nuclear sources.
