2015 Ram 2500 TPMS oddity

Marine diesel

My car (2014 dodge, 2.4 tigershark engine) goes thru a qt of oil every 2000 miles and has since brand new. Well, I got an oil change in sept and have now put almost 1000 miles on the car since the oil change. Normally I would expect to be down maybe a half qt. But now I am down just about a whole qt. Or roughly double the normal consumption.
I dont see any puddles on the garage floor, no smoke, dont smell any oil. Anyone have any ideas what could cause the usage to double, well, overnight ?

Has a fail saving mode build in oil switch to stall engine during low amount of oil!!:cool:
I can see that on my lawnmowers and pressure washer, generators, etc....but to save an engine at the expense of a t-bone in an intersection, or attempting to get to the roadside from lane 3 during rush hour on the freeway, or on a draw bridge???

Was it on the full mark after the oil change, for sure? Same brand and viscosity oil?
Well, not on the full mark right after the oil change. This car takes only 5.5 qts of oil. But, they always will put in 6 qts which, with a GOOD drain, overfills it by a half quart. So I always tell them to put in 5 qts and Ill just top it off the next morning when its cold. So, this time, when I checked the oil the next morning, it was overfilled. It looked like more than just a half qt, so I think they didnt get a good drain and it was probably closer to a full qt overfill. And when you consider that 0w20 oil expands when it gets hot, it was a ways over a full qt overfill by the time I got home and then by the time I got back to the dealer to have them drain some oil down.

Can a overfill cause the the pvc valve to get clogged ? And cause an increase in oil consumption ?

I have never experienced a PCV clog from too much oil. However, I did experience "high oil consumption" with heavy evidence (blowing smoke screen) after a station attendant "sold" my wife on a quart of oil for her new 1980 turbo Capri. Probably not the same as your situation. Usually a little overfill is not an issue. It becomes an issue if the crankshaft is slapping and churning the oil. BIG bad stuff can occur then. I would check the entire crankcase ventilation system for leaks and clogs; just make sure it is free flowing. Excess pressure can find its way past the rings. Most of the time with burning oil scent to the exhaust.

I guess it depends on the particular engine and its breather design. Overfull can cause windage, and, in theory, it could overwhelm the breather, whose normal job, besides ventilation, is to separate/condense some of the vapor and return it to the crankcase. All theory. As pointed out, this particular engine series has a history of oil consumption complaints.

I actually saw an engine that suffered this fate. My buddy at the machine shop was doing heads and engines for an old-school, stand-alone Jeep dealer. They dropped off an I-6, I can't remember if it was a 258 or a 4.0, from a Cherokee they had sold new. The lady literally drove it until the engine squeaked. Oil was NEVER changed or checked. As I recall, it made it over 20K miles before submitting. Other than the cylinder head, it was a total loss. She just couldn't understand it:rolleyes:
