Cchanged the oil, and while checking it the dipstick tube slid in toward the engine a good inch or so.



Not sure where it should be to check fill level. This is the 96 2500.



Afraid to drive it. Should the crimp in the tube be all of the way to the clamp?

You are ok Mine does that to. You are just sliding the tube in the clamp nothing is changing the length of your tube.

I see.

Wouldn't it allow the dipstick to enter the crankcase further, reading a higher oil level though?

Only if it managed to slide into the side of the block, and I think that is about impossible without the press fit tube the sleeve slides over goes in first, which means you have a wicked oil leak going on when the engine is running.
 
I assumed the entire tube was sliding.
It looks like only the top of the tube is sliding, not changing the bottom (block) end at all.
sure made me pucker though.
