I had my oil changed Wed afternoon and put synthetic in for the first time. I got up this morning and noticed a spot of oil under the truck. After crawling under the truck and checking the plug (it was some loose) I noticed that there was a black rubber looking washer that had been torn. It is still leaking slowly even after I tightened the plug. My question is what kind of seal was on the plug originally? I have changed the oil myself most times but I don't remember it being a black rubber seal. The truck is a 2001 with 60,000 on it. Should I just order a new heavy duty plug from Geno's or can I get a new seal at a local parts store? What size is the seal and what kind is it? tia.

The original plug has a square opening for 3/8" rachet. It has a rubberized part that seals(like a built-in rubber washer). If that is what you have on, then the rubber part is torn, and does not seal any more. I installed Fumoto drain valve on mine, got the local distributor of thei web site, but I think Geno's also has it. It made oil change so easy. Good luck.

I don't know about availibility of the seal at local parts stores, but the dealer will sell you one. They killed me on one@ $5+!!!! Genos sells an alternative one which has served me well for some years now. It comes complete with a new seal. If you lived near to me (San Diego), I'd lay one on you as I've got extras.

Most problems with these come from over tightening them, only way to be sure is do it yourself and use 40lbs torque.
