Got a strange one, Buddy was backing up my truck up a steep grad to load up some stumps. About halfway up the hill the truck started dumping oil out the overflow/vent, Into that stupid bowl. I lost about 2 to 3 quarts, and of course the oil hit the fan and is now everywhare. Any Ideas why this happened. I have gone up and down several steep hills with out ever having this problem. I am pretty sure the oil was not over filled. I just did a run from Pittsburgh to state collage and back with no problems. I am very confused and concerned. Thanks for all the help as always.

Check out TSB 09-002-02 - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/membersonly/tsb/01tsb.htm . This is a well known problem and there are solutions out there. Search around on the site because I believe someone posted a cheaper solution on here.

Crankcase Breather Overflow

This bulletin applies to 1998-2002 (BR) Ram trucks equipped with the 24-valve Cummins diesel engine built after March 27, 1998 (engine serial number 56443872). Owners of these vehicles may experience engine oil overflow from the front crankcase breather when the vehicle is operated off-road on an extreme downhill grade (37. 5% or 22° slope/grade). Operation of this type for extended periods of time can cause enough engine oil depletion to damage the engine. A kit containing all components necessary to eliminate the oil overflow has been made available. If the condition exists, perform the repair procedure outlined in this bulletin. The repair involves the addition of a new breather kit.

Rob its a known problem area on the 24V ctds with the front breather. The oil in the front of the motor when the truck is real nose down, gets picked up by the geartrain and sent up to the breather. I know there isa factory TSB on it. Somewhere around here there is a thread on a good fix if you wheel on steep grades. It invloved removing the valve cover, drilling a 3/4-1" hole and installing an old style chrysl;er gasser breather on the valve cover, and running the vent line under the truck, then the factory breather was just blocked off.

UPDATE Just got my truck back from the deal after having the TSB done. They said it would take 1 day to do. 3 days later I got it back. You would think after all the work they did they wuld clean off the oil that sprayed all over. Nope they didn't. So Tomotrrow I will be spending my time cleaning. But the TSB is done(all under warrenty) and I will be hitting some steep hills this weekend. Lets see if it worked.

I installed the new Fleetguard "Enviroguard" set-up on my truck and it works flawlessly so far (approx. 5,000mi since installed). It's spendy ($180) but I got sick of "servicing" (emptying) the little black bottle at every oil change. The new setup is 100% maintenance free.
