I recently ran across (on another website I believe) the results of oil analysis done on Power Service Diesel Oil Extender. The results were as follows:

Calcium 6281 ppm

Magnesium 736 ppm

Phosphorus 3548 ppm

Zinc 3347 ppm

After reading the oil analysis in issue 57 and having a very basic understanding of additives this seems like a good additive. Could it be added to CJ to bring it up a little? Or as it seems CI-4 is back on the market should I just stock up and not bother with the added expense?

Thanks for your opinions!

Andy

I tend to be pretty wary of aftermarket oil additives. I mean, if the additive is that wonderful, why wouldn't the oil company put it in?

I wouldn't do it. If you need peace of mind, run the CI-4+.

Oil Extender by PS is highly regarded on some of the oil forums... however, it is a moot point being they don't make it anymore!

I have a single bottle of it left if ... I'll probably use it in something else...

[What's wrong with CJ oil?

I recently did a 10k oil change on CJ-it was as clean as the day I put it in. The oil filter is not picking up all that soot. Where is it going? At least it was getting suspended with CI. OR as ignorant as I am about oil there may be no cause for concern. Anybody with substantiated proof care to comment? Not trying to start a war or argument just trying to do the best thing for my engine.

Several of us have UOAs that show CJ-4 to be a very good oil for OCIs up to 25k miles... I have two UOAs at or around 10k tht show the oil is working very good.

I also had the valve cover off my truck after approximately 20k of CJ-4 and it was spotless... not that 20k of use shows a whole lot. But my oil gets just as black as when using CI-4+.

Several people have been posting very good sample reports with CJ oil ... ... ... ..... however, the only threads that seem to get attention and grow to several pages, are the ones crying about how bad it is.

I've proven to myself that it's quality oil, all of you nay sayers will have to prove it to yourselves I quess.

There certainly isn't ANYTHING WRONG with API CJ rated oil. The problem is people's perception based on the levels of additives such as Zink, Calcium and Phosphorus, which has lowered TBN. One has to realize however, the newer CJ-4 rated oils are using newer "ashless" additives such as oxidation inhibiters, dispersants, and VI improvers that were developed for the CJ-4 oils. When the low cost additives such as Zink and phosporus came under attack with the "Particulate Filters" now on the new Engines, these new more expensive additives were incorporated in the CJ-4 oils. All this of course lowered the TBN, which again is perceived as being a lower grade of oil, which it is not!

Modern techniques used to predict Diesel oil performance and an overview of the technology development that went into meeting the new specifications were utilized by many large oil Companies as well as the large Motor Companies such as Mack, Cummins, Detroit Diesel. As a result of this, an enormous amount of predictive laboratory testing and actual engine tests were completed on CI-4, CI-4 plus and CJ-4 oils, solidifying a link to real world performance.

Thank You Wayne, this sounds just as encouraging as the sampling results that we have been seeing here on TDR.

Wayne,

Thank you for the input. This explains some of why the CJ oils got a bad review in the TDR article. This reaffirms that there is always more to learn.
