I had to make a 700 mile trip on Tuesday so I changed my oil before I left cause it was getting close on the mileage.
My 17 year old daughter has taken an interest in learning how to service and repair her car and she decided to help me with the oil change.
She did the final oil pour and we finished up. I saw that she had replace the cap but I didn't check to see that it was tight.
All was fine until I stopped at a rest area in North Carolina. As I was accelerating up the hill to get back on I-95 the CEL came on so I slowed down and pulled on the shoulder. I checked under the hood and there was no obvious problems so I pulled out my Actron and checked the codes and had three crancase pressure codes, P0501 if I remember right. I checked the filter and there were no leaks so I checked the oil filler cap. I saw some oil vapor around the cap and that is not normal. It was not screwed in tight. I screwed it down till it clicked, cleared the codes and took off. The CEL didn't come back. I stopped at a dealership in Waldorf, MD and asked them if the loose cap could have cause that and the mechanic said it would. He checked and found no codes set so I guess all is well.
I'll have to show this to my daughter today. Just wanted to let you guys know that the oil cap is like the fuel filler cap. Turn it till it clicks or it will set a code.
