I was changing my oil as usual and i take off the air box hose to the turbo and noticed an oil film on the blades and around the venturi. Is this normal or should i be concerned with a seal starting to go?

What kind of air filter do you have?

If you have a stock air filter you shouldn't have oil on the turbo fins, if you have an aftermarket oiled filter it may be over oiled but you should check in to it.

If you don't run an oiled filter not many places it can come from. You may want to have the innards of your turbo checked.

I have the same thing going on with my turbo. Go a little easier on the oil next time when you clean your filter. There is nowhere for oil to end up there on that side of the turbo... ...

Is there any major harm from getting a slight coating on the blades?? Seems like the over oiling causes the oil "vapors" to get pulled onto the blades and throught the system... but at what point do you feel there is too much oil on the blades? I've seen water droplets mess up a 500MW steam turbine by contacting the rotor fan. And that was at 3600 RPM. But since the turbo operates at higher RPM's I was wondering if oil vapors, which could be looked at as very small solid particles, hurts much. At very high RPM the turbo probably doesn't distinguish between a drop of liquid and a rock. They are both bad.

all stock

the truck is all stock just using a napa air filter. just changed the oil at 4 thousand and didnt see any oil on the fins. there wasnt a lot o them barely enough to stick to the paper towel, but i am pretty anal and didnt want to get freaked out. I run it unloaded about 190 miles a day 65-80 mph. i really dont like to have it go down for repairs if it is something simple to fix before it becomes a major repair. i will be putting on a 5 wheel hitch this weekend, and i will be looking for the dreaded 53 on the block.
