Oil filter 1/3 full at oil change

My '04. 5 has 120k miles so I have changed the oil 16 or 17 times. Today when I changed it the oil filter was only 1/3 full. If I remember correctly, it has always been full to the top. The truck sat for an hour before I started the oil change. Is this something to be concerned about?

Nope, completely normal. The oil will siphon out of the filter if left to sit for a while.

Mine is always down about an inch or so too. Have no idea why but it's always been that way. Maybe there's a siphon effect?

I don't see that happening with oem filters but almost all aftermarket filters

I've only used Fleetguard. I think it's a rather nice "feature". When you remove the filter it isn't likely to spill easily.

Thanks for the input. I've been using Fleetguard Stratapore filters. It makes sense to me that 1" could siphon out of the filter but I don't understand how 2/3 of the oil in the filter could siphon out. Can anyone explain how this can happen?

Our filters do not utilize a ADBV. Best guess is when the oil starts to cool it causes a slight vacuum.

Normal. Sometimes mine is almost full and other times half empty. My old 1996 was always half empty.
