 When doing my normal oil change, I usually put a 1 gallon plastic bag around the filter to catch the old oil coming out of the filter & the filter is usually full. However, yesterday, I did the same thing and no oil came out. When I peered into the filter it was only 2/3 full. This time I had drained the oil when hot after sitting for about 20 min and let it drain out for about 45 min. This one has me puzzled. 26K on the truck. Pressure has been showing normal on the oil & a sample is on the way to Blackstone as per normal. Anyone else notice this during your changes?

This is normal for some of the oil to siphon out of the filter if the truck has been sitting a while or you let it drain a long time before removing filter. I have been doing this since 2nd oil change as it is not as messy.

If you wait 45 minutes or longer after you shutdown the truck from operating Tempature you will get less oil and as mentioned by Shooter, makes things a lot neater.

I had the opposite thing happen. My first few oil changes, I had no spillage from the filter. This last one, I had the overflow and needed the bag. The other times, the truck had been run prior to the change. This time, it sat in the driveway overnight, then I changed it cold. Weird, huh? I would think it would be the opposite.

I've always had engine hot at changes, and had a full filter. One time i did it cold and filter oil level was down about 2 inches. I hate changing hot, but hot oil keeps contaminates in suspension. Just messy!
