oil filter change on 2016 3500?

I realize that there a two schools of thought for changing the oil filter. I believe that Ram intended for us to use the thru fender access and others think that the top access (by removing the turbo intake hose) is best. I thought that working from the bottom would make sense, but there is a steel plate blocking access from the bottom.

The fender access looked a bit small to me, so I tried to push a new filter thru that area and there is no way that it will fit. Looks to be about 1/2" to small. I've attached a picture. There would be plenty of room except that there are Freon lines running thru the area.

Looks to me that the only way to change the filter is from the top, after removing the air duck. It may be possible to get a filter wrench on from the side to loosen the filter, but it will need to come out from the top.

I wish the RAM designers/engineers would actually drive and do maintenance procedures to their trucks.

Dealer will be doing the first change, so I'll see how they do it.

They need to kick the engineers in the butt for blocking an oil filter, I am sure the Ram House line mechanics raised Hell over this issue.
Looks like another reason to keep my 2011, it's easy .

The OPs a/c line is out of position. My 15 looks like all the other posts. I change my filter through the fender with no trouble.

I've also done three oil changes through the fender on my 2015. Only when the baggie tears does it get messy.

Our 2015 built in Dec 2014 does NOT have the line blocking the opening. I will however use Cummins12V98's from the top method! SNOKING

I still like my method. I did a write up on this on here "EASY! Cummins 6.7 2013 and up oil change" I would provide a link but not computer savvy!

I really wasn't asking about the top access to the oil filter. I am well aware that it can be done that way, but I would rather not have to disassemble part of the air intake to get to the filter. If that is what RAM intended, I guess I will have to live with that.

Does anyone else with a 2015 (or other years) have the AC line blocking the thru fender access (as shown in the first post of this thread)? I am wondering how the dealer deals with this.

Mine looks exactly like this.

Out of all the pictures posted except the one, they have room to "squeeze" the filter through the tight spot they provided. As one poster stated and many others have most likely found that it is easy to tear your ziploc bag and create a mess. I will stay on top with my strap wrench, and lift the filter out the top. Minimal chance to spill oil all over things. SNOKING

I am of the same opinion. Bottom line is if you have the time it's best to let the rig drain for several hours to get as much of the old oil out and the filter has time to siphon down and does not spill over when removed. With this rig I will use a zip lock bag at all times. I let mine drain overnight when possible, just be sure to prop the hood open so ya just don't go fire it off without any oil.

Landshark....my '14 looks like the picture of the '16. But I could not access the filter with my larger than average hands and a strap wrench. Besides that the Cummins gorilla had it so tight I too had the filter changed by the dealer. I regretted that because for two weeks I had oil dripping from the undercarriage. They must NOT use the bag method. I really thought I had a leak but mainly it just made a mess on my driveway. I did the next change from the top as has been suggested and set my clamps up for an easier removal next time. Curious that your hose lines are set up differently but maybe it's the difference between assembly and parts from Mexico (mine) and Canada?????
