TDR Member Tip - aFe Pre Filter

DRossi

When changing the oil filter with the engine hot (as it should be done) I use filter pliers to loosen filter and then slide a 1 gallon zip lock bag over the filter the finish removing the filter by hand. This will prevent dumping oil on the crossmember and other underside stuff especially on the 2nd Gen trucks. On my 3rd gen I loosen the filter with a Geno's filter wrench, then remove the wrench, put the bag on then reapply the wrench and remove the filter. Makes it simple and reasonably clean.

Old Yankee cheapness here.

Why waste a nice ziplock baggie? I use an old bag that a loaf of bread comes in. It is narrow and fits the filter nicely. It may take a little more finnesse to slide over the filter but heck, it is cheap.

Best -

I just punch a hole in the bottom of the filter, go inside and have a nice glass of ice tea while the oil drains out of the filter into my drain pan. Then I remove the filter, open the flomo valve that I bought, and while that is draining, I fill a new oil filter, and put it on. Then, while the oil is draining, go inside, and have another glass of ice tea. Oo. :DOo. Then go outside and finish up the job.

Grumpy - - Did that for many years on a 6. 2 GMC in a Suburban, but after twice having the filter collapse during removal, I gave that the old heave, besides on my '01 it would still run down over the cross member, and I know I'd manage to do something on the '06 to spill it where I didn't want it. I use a 5 gallon plastic fuel can to catch drain oil (use one of Geno's drain hoses) and it would be hard to catch oil in the fill hole.

I've got a 15 quart oil drain pan, so I just let it run into it, and wipe up anything that goes on the cross member, ect. I've never had an oil filter collapse on me. How could this happen? Put on to tight? Not enough oil on the gasket?

Ahhh, yes, Geno's Garage. My wife blocks that site from payday until she gets the bills paid. :{:-laf:):{ And your from Chattanooga. We always wanted to come down there and check thinks out.

Good idea, but I would consider substituting something for the ice tea. I drink it for supper!!!!!

I would, also, however, I do need to make sure that everything gets put back together, and the proper amount of oil is replaced.

Grumpy - - We just bailed out of Ohio to come back to Chattanooga - - Come on down! Low of the year tonight 29F!

Don't know why they collapsed, they were Fram and the gaskets seemed to swell up, and I would bet they were over tightened - - I got to do the service after they came in from being on a long trip.

When I had my GMC with the 454, I used the bigger filter. Did the same to drain them as I do on the Dodge. Did the same on the Powerstroke that I had, too.

We wanted to visit Chattanooga, and even had a campground picked out... Raccoon something. But, my wife has Multiple Sclerosis, and sometimes things change at the last minute. We are hoping to attend the IRV2.com rally in Ohio this year.

oil filters

Fram filters are garbage, use the ones from Geno's garage! You Can't go wrong. 1994 12 valve 2500 4X4 Keeps up with the traffic Thanks to Old Man Bob 4X4

Now, what makes you say that? I've used Fram, Mopar, Fleetguard, Purolater, and Motorcraft when I had my powerstroke. I never had any problems with any of these.

Usually, when I buy oil filters, I buy a case lot, like I did with the Mopar filters that I'm using now.

Collapsed oil filters brings back a very funny memory for me.

It involved my boss / ex boss at a body shop. We would get into fights regularly, and I would storm out of there for a few days, then come back. Or, his wife or son would call me and tell me to come over, because the bossman was about to do something really stupid.

Once, after one of our blowups, I was driving by there on Sunday morning and the garage was open. I stopped in to make sure nobody was cleaning out the place, and sure enough, there was my boss under his Chevy Duallie, with a 454 in it. He had bits of oil filter all over the floor: the outside can, the paper element, and some other pieces laying around.

The base of the filter was stuck to the threaded fitting on the block. He ended up using a chisel and hammer to drive it off.

I had told him before the wrench was for only loosening the filter, NOT FOR TIGHTENING THE FILTER. Guess he finally listened.

Yep - - Thats what happend on my Chebby - - Some one over tightened it - - I had used a quick change place while on a trip - - Didn't learn the first time, just had to try it again. Both times ended uo with a hammer and awl, then a punch to get the top loose after the can and guts were all over the floor. Tried to use a small pipe wrench, but it wouldn't fit. Don't think it was Frams fault, but haven't used Frams on my Cummins because of oil pressure caused several failures on members trucks.
