Does anyone have a tip for installing a new filter, everytime I change oil it takes me the longest time to get the new filter started on the treads, I don't want to cross tread the Damm thing but it is a fight. Thanks Jack

Tip

Good question Jack! I have the same problem, sometimes I have to bring it back out and rest a minute and try again.

Works for me

Have to contort a bit, need something to stand on, fill filter 3/4 of the way up and with right hand holding the top of filter, lower to space below the threaded area. "Heres where being a contortionist helps" with left hand under filter body (squeezing between A/C lines I think) supporting it's weight, then use right hand to turn opposit direction of threads till it pops once, then turn correct direction. It should freely turn to the O-ring then tighten as usual.

Like I said it works for me?

My way

1. Soft (old blanket) over fender & battery

2. Both clodhoppers on milk box

3. Place gut on blanket

4. (Important) scratch everthing that might itch for the next 10"

5. With right hand fish charged filter down to fitting

6. Left hand down by air filter (yes it will go in there) and now

your glad everthing was properly scratched

Push the filter up with your left hand, use your right to level and turn. It does not get easier with practice. good luck

I do all of the above and add one item. I always take the air hose between the air filter box and the turbo. This gives me a chance to check for dirt getting in from the air filter side and check the turbo vains for any dirt.

When i had the filter block mounted, i removed the turbo inlet hose and got a set of giant Channel locks to remove the filter.

Tired many ways on installing the filter. What works best for me is to fill the filter, 3/4 or almost full, then lean it on the AC line that is directly under the filter. The one that prevents you from getting at it from inderneath. Anyway, lean it on that and whatever else can. Get under the truck, reach up with one arm and just thread it on. Do have to turn it counter just to be sure to hear the 'pop' then turn it clockwise. Had a few filters that this took a little bit of time but for me it is better than bending over the fender and doing the arm contortonist act.

Do like the idea of removing the air filter hose. Will try that the next time for a comparsion.

I don't know, guys, I don't have any real problem getting the filter on. I get the filter in there, then stick my right hand underneath the AC lines. Push up on the center of the filter, centering it on the "stud" (lack of a better word). Rotate it with the left hand, and voila, done. This is, of course, after prefilling, and there is no mess. Hope this works for you guys. :)

Do it with you eyes closed

The filter, at least on my last truck and my current truck, doesn't go on square to the block. Take a good look at it before you take it off. If you look at the block and try to screw the filter on you (I) tend to misalign the filter.

I place the filter against the mounting stud, rotate the filter counter clockwise, the filter should drop onto the starter thread, then tighten the filter.

My Dad taught me the reverse rotation trick years ago for blind/difficult assemblies, has helped me out many times over the years.

I agree with all the above. ;) Because the thing does not line up square to the engine block it goofs you up. I do it, believe it or not, with my eyes closed and just feel it. Reverse and it pops in then tighten it up. By the way 18,750 miles changed today oil and filter. Be careful of tightening the filter to much. It was tight like the first time luckily web type strap wrenched worked once again almost busted a gut only crushed filter a little. ;) Was about to get the breaker bar and cheater. This time snugged up by hand then half turn more. I think I did 3/4 turn last time. By the way tried draining completely before taking filter off some said it would drain half out thus avoid mess. Did not mine!!!! You don't suppose it was so tight because it was cold usually take it off when still almost to hot to touch?

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who's had trouble getting the filter started. The reverse until pop routine work good as long as I sing a little of the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" while I do it. Doesn't matter how you tighten the new filter, it's still a bear to break loose hot or cold.

Thanks, Ive been doing all the above except the reverse thing, But I think Daves right about the block, I keep trying to put it on straight up and it wont start that way. I will try the reverse trick next time. :D
