Before we left home in January for Yuma I put 3 gallons of oil and a new oil filter,(Delo 400 and Fleetgard), in my tool box. Took the truck in to Jiffy Lube today to have the oil changed and found out I brought the wrong oil filter. Didn't bother to check it before I left home. Duh !!! All the oil was changed and old filter was off before they realized it was the wrong one. Question is, they had to put on a Penzoil filter. Will that be OK or should I get the correct Fleetgard and put it on?

Does anybody know what Fleetgard filter # LF 3970 fits?

Thanks for any thoughts and ideas.

Larry

The LF3970 fits a lot of the B series Cummins engines, mostly the 8. 3 or early M11 if I recall correctly. CaseIH uses them in their 7120 series of Magnum Tractors, which have the 8. 3L engine. There are also a lot of the Freightliner trucks running the 8. 3 with this filter used on them. IT's 1-1/8in threads, while our Dodges run 1" threads. Personally, I'd change the filter out when I got home, and add the quart of oil. Pennzoil filters are made by Fram, and I've seen problems with them not being up to spec. Often they just don't have the proper micron filtration required for the later model trucks, and are not what you want to run for longetivity, IMHO. I have seen some that have seperated internally..... so you get paper AND wear particles down hole... . I bought an '04 recently with a blown engine that had almost always had Pennzoil filters installed... . I can send you a picture of the bearings at 182k if you like... . :(

No, it is not the correct filter.

Wrong Thread Size. 1 1/8" thread rather than the 1" that we need.

Even though it fits some QSB series engines they have a different oil cooler set-up than the common "B"s that we have.

QSB is industrial and some truck engines.

I am somewhat nervous disagreeing with the "Filter Guy" I'll have you know... .....

Whoops. . I look at my notes and read LF3972, not LF3970... probably the same thing that happened on the original purchase??

I've been looking at too many oil filter numbers today!

Thanks Mike!

I wonder if the QSB oil cooler is any better? (I need to stop wondering so much, it usually costs me a lot of $$)

Next time we fool with a QSB and have an ESN to work with I'll have Seth check that out. We run into them on occasion, some tree killers and cranes have QSB's in them.

I suspect it would bolt into the engine block cavity the same, just has a larger cooler element in it and would be shaped or set out from the block accordingly.

I might even have a printed QSB book here as I think about it, will check that out before heading home.

Thanks for the replys guys. I am going to buy a new filter, (the right one), here in Yuma and put it on before we leave. Rather be safe than sorry... .

I think that is a smart thing to do. The sad history of Fram/Pennzoil filters with Cummins ISB engines is long and costly for the truck owners.

Good call.

There are several filters of higher filtration efficiancy than stock that are roughly the same cost. Baldwin BT7349 or Fleetguard LF16035.

If you let it sit overnight and cool off there should be no spilling and very little oil lost.

LF3970 fits the 24 valve and newer B series engines that are NOT in Dodges. When the 98. 5 engines came out Dodge wanted to keep the same threads as before. Cummins changed it on all other models, motor homes, Freightliners, buses, etc. It will NOT fit 8. 3 and M11 Cummins. They use the much larger LF3000 or LF9009. LF3970s get sold quite often to Dodge customers by inexperienced parts people, and some customers forget to tell the parts guy it is for a Dodge. Shadrach
