Hey guys, does anyoe know if someone makes an oil filter relocation kit for our trucks? I am getting a little tired of trying to get at the filter and then spilling oil all over everything  . Is there a kit available to relocate the filter to a more accessible place like on the side of the frame rail? Thanks!

Robert

P. S. Happy New Year!

Robert,

The easiest way for you to relocate the oil filter on your crew cab, is to bring it down here to Virginia. I'll take real good care of it and you can come drive it whenever you want! :-laf :-laf

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I take off the air filter hose, and then get a Wal Mart bag (too cheap to buy big Zip Loc bags, but they'd be preferrable) to slip over the filter. Loosen the filter by hand (I have a fair grip) and let it fall into the bag. Of course, the bag almost always has a pinhole in it, so I get a drop or two on the frame rail and rubber cover, but overall it is cleaner than without the bag.

I'd have to agree with Daniel.....

He IS cheap. :-laf :-laf

Only kidding. I also use a bag, but it's a good ziplock. . only the best for the Cummins. But I don't remove the air hose... I'm non intercooled ... . so there's not as much in the way. Rarely spill anything. Never spilled in my boat while changing the filter in the 6BTA.

Perma-cool has the components and may have a kit for the Dodge Cummins, I don't recall. Amsoils spin on adapter is cheap, their remote filter heads are not. Check out perma-cool.com

The Cummins oil filter is 1"-16 threads per inch.

Amsoil offers both a remote mount full flow and the remote mount dual filter Bypass kit, where both the full flow and the bypass filters are mounted side by side. Really nice setup, and simple to install. Sure makes servicing alot easier, and keeps the oil cleaner!

I always drain the truck pan then do the filter which may be common to many. In both the 99 2500 and my 91. 5... I've never had a drop of oil from the filter. Its usually 1/2" below the base. I don't know if its siphoning out as I drain the pan or what. I just never see any spill.

Thanks guys! I will look into the Amsoil relocation kits. I have tried the bag method as well, but I sometimes spill when putting the filter in as I like to pre fill the filter. Also, the other reason is that at somepoint if I put twins on this baby... ... Oo. , well, accesability will be REALLY compromised!! ;)

Tugboatphil,

Driving it to you for you to drive will be difficult to say the least! See the attached photos for the reason! Oo.

It might sound like too much more work but I remove the battery and the air intake to the turbo and it gives me all the room I need. be sure to disconnect the positive cable from the drivers side battery. disconnect it first thing you do and re-connect last thing you do. Before you screw the filter back on fill the canister with oil so as not to starve the turbo bearings on initial start up. I feel sure most everyone knows the safety precautions but just incase someone does not then it becomes a good idea to mention them. 98 12v Q cab short bed 2 wheel Auto Tran/with Sun Coast Torque conv, Gear Vendor, centramatic balancers, Aluminum wheels and steering box replaced with correct ratio steering box to cure the NASTY wandering problem. It's a keeper, she purrs like a putty tat.

I always pre-fill, but leave it (the oil level) 1/4 short so I don't spill.

I think you'll have that same sitation with a relocation.

Or find a helper with a steady hand.

After looking at the pics, I don't see why your having a problem with accessing the filter. It looks easy to get at to me! :D

By the way, I just unscrew mine and pull it out, no baggie or nuthin. The little oil I spill helps keep the truck from rusting.

It's nothing more than my personal opinion. If you have been changing oil on a 1965 John Deere 4020 which is performed standing next to the engine and then revert to changing the oil on your Dodge Ram, then yes. I'd say it's a bit difficult to reach the filter.

I'm willing to wait until you get the twins installed!! Remember, no road salt down here!! :-laf

Greenleaf,

I cant help it if I am a farmboy and like easy filter access! ;) Also, it is a 1972 JD! .

Tugboatphil,

:-laf :-laf :-laf I do like the no salt idea though... ...

Ptoombs,

Yes, it is a Gear Vendors overdrive. I figgure with the 6 spd, the two range NP205 (I have made it into a 2wd low as well as 4wd low range), and the Overdrive for every gear, I should have 24 gears! Oo. :D

The main reason for all of this is that as this is a fully restored truck, I want to keep it really clean. Oil spills are nasty on a white engine bay.
