Hey guys what's the ticket on filter wrenches, I saw a picture of a strap type wrench you use with a ratchet and extension... but for the life of me I can't find where. The large plyer type I used on my 90 doesn’t look like the answer for this 02.

Filter wrench

Tried a few different types, the strap seems to work best for me. Got mine at NAPA too but I'm sure other places have it. bg

I use a pair of oil filter pliers from Wal Mart. As long as you grip it at the top (near the crimp), and don't over tighten, they work great. Easier than snaking a strap up from the bottom. My $0. 02.

Ditto on the strap wrench, got mine from a NAPA dealer as well, takes a 1/2" drive and works real well.

If you get a K & N filter, it has a hex on the bottom and you use a big wrench like a 1" or something and use that. I go from underneath and turn it by going vertical on the end of it and using another wrench to turn it. Works good

just take a regular oil filter wrench and take the pin out of the strap so it can be opened up. slide the strap behind the filter and put the pin/bolt back on the strap. this takes two seconds and most likely everyone already has one of these wrenches kicking around somwhere:) ... . james

Easy way

I bought a wrench from Snap-on and the pin that doesnt hinged I ground down as to remove. Pull the pin wrap the strap around the filter reinstall pin move wrench up to top or near top where the lip is and as you turn the handle you cinch up and turn to get off. Works great and was real easy that way. When loose pull pin and take wrench out. Put zip-lock bag around filter and take off. Oh, I had enough length on the stock pin, but putting a longer pin would help to pop up tp grad to remove. Works right or left, just put pin in from top. What I mean is hinging lever. The pin ground is closest to the handle.

I got an adjustable oil filter wrench at the local autoparts store.

Its made by KD and is kind of like channel lock pliers.

Works great.

I keep forgetting to look under someone elses hood. I can get a normal metal band type filter wrench on my filter without any special mods. It's kinda close but works fine.

I think everybody looks down their nose at the way I do it. No filter wrench at all. Easy to do and quick. I just use a long screw driver as a chizel on the upper rim of the filter. A few licks with a hammer and it comes loose. Spin it off with my hands. No problem.

Thats the way I do it. Works everytime:--)

I just use my paws, on and off. It does say HAND tighten, I've never had a leaker. Wifes Saturn is different, need the wrench to brake it loose.

I have one of those pairs of oil filter pliers and they worked a little bit, but I couldn't get the filter off one day so I got the end all of solutions. Working with downhole tools a lot at work, I am used to using a chain wrench to tighten and loosen our downhole tools. I just got a smaller version from Sears that would fit in the compartment. I never have any problem getting them off now.

I have a pair of oil filter pliers but always use 16 inch Channel-Locs instead. No need to wrap them most of the way around the filter like you do the filter pliers. Even though I install hand tight I've never been able to get the filter off by hand.

You can click the link in my signature to see a picture of the strap wrench which can be used with a 1/2 drive ratchet (and it costs about 4-5 bucks. . )
