Heard horror stories about FRAM. Just wanted to get a little input as to what everyone uses and which I should use maybe besides Napa Gold. Thanks in advance.

I have always used Fleetguard stratapore filters, just been getting them from genos. I was in Wal Mart the other day and saw that they are selling the Mopar brand filters for our Cummins, like $9. 00, I heard they were made by Fleetguard.

Yes. What he said. :-laf

If I remember right, the stock Dodge/Mopar filter is made by fleetguard but it uses the standard filter media. The stratapore uses a higher quality filter media. I've been using fleetguard stratapores from Geno's also. Allot of people will to tell you that all oil filters are the same or made by the same people but buy a filter cutter and you will see they are not all made the same. There will be variances in media from paper to micro glass, elements that are glued to end plates and others are molded into the end plates. Some filters will have glue rings or separator bands so the pleats won't bunch up. My feeling is you get what you pay for.
Regards, Mike.

This is from the TSBs on TDR

Engine lubricant.

This bulletin involves 1989-2001 Ram trucks equipped with the 5. 9L Cummins diesel engines. This bulletin discusses the recommended oil filters for use with Cummins 5. 9L diesel engine.

Part No Manufacturer

05016547AC Mopar

LF3894 Fleetguard Stratapore

LF3552 Fleetguard Microglass

LF3959 Fleetguard Cellulose

3937695 Cummins Cellulose

FL896 MotorCraft Cellulose

L45335 Purolator Cellulose

PF1070 AC Delco Cellulose

The information only bulletin was issued to alert the field to problems caused by aftermarket oil filter. For example, neoprene compounds used internally in the manufacture of oil filters not recommended by DaimlerChrysler may seperate from the filter, lodge in the piston cooling nozzle, and cause the engine to fail. THIS IS NOT AN ENGINE DEFECT.

I buy the Stratapore from Genos or use the Mopar in a pinch.

Correct. In my mind, a MoPar with standard Fleetguard media is much less likely to disintegrate internally and clog a crank cooling nozzle. Not as good filtration as Stratapore, but sturdier than a filter in a lurid colour. :p

Well you can hear many many things about filters and oil and most folks have their own personal choices. I use Wix and have used them for many years and many miles... I have over 500,000 miles on this jalopy and have never had a problem.

That being said I have changed the oil regulary (every 7000 miles) so regular maintenance is MUST. I haven't used Fram filters in anything I drive or work on. Never had a problem with them, just think they are a little too cheap.

LF3894 Fleetguard Stratapore

The only full flow oil filter that has been on my truck (other than the original Mopar off the production line, which is a re-badged fleetgaurd). Hard to go wrong with it. FRAM is a big no no, due to the problems that they had with filters coming apart and taking out Cummins Engine before.

Just my 2 cents,

J-

My experience with Wix has been good, as well as Hastings. Both were in subdued colours. Yeah, I know that colour is stoopid way to determine filter quality, but it works for me. Actually, it doesn't. It's just that the filters I won't use are usually in some flashy colour.

..... :) .....

Interesting, when I click the "Truck Profile" on the bottom of your posts it takes me to "edit" for my truck's profile ? ? ? ?

Funny, when I first started reading it I said to myself, "This guy's truck has to be a twin to mine?" Duh, then I noticed it was my truck - good one:-laf
